Description	:	Loyd Ernest Shay LAUREL — Loyd Ernest Shay was born on Dec. 12, 1919, in rural Park City. His father, Loren, rode horse back to town to get the doctor and a blizzard blew in and he was three days getting back to the old stone house on Cemetery Road. Read More	Loyd Ernest Shay LAUREL — Loyd Ernest Shay was born on Dec. 12, 1919, in rural Park City. Loyd graduated from Laurel High School and then worked on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, putting in new irrigation projects. His next job was herding 100 sheep 80 miles to Kadoka, S.D., with a horse and a dog. World War II broke out and Loyd came home to Laurel to sign up in the Army. Loyd married his high school sweetheart, Irma Lucille Branstetter, Nov. 29, 1941. They resided south of Laurel in a house they built and raised their three children. Irma passed away on Sept. 15, 1979. Loyd married Alta Bray, Nov. 17, 1984. They were constant companions working on various community projects and had a special interest in the Laurel Senior Citizen Center. For years, they delivered Meals on Wheels to shut-ins in the Laurel area. Alta supported Loyd through his long illness by visiting, talking and playing cards. After the war, Loyd worked for O.M. Wold Equipment in Laurel and then was offered the Laurel Post Master position, which he retained until he retired in 1980. Loyd and his brother-in-law, Lawrence Branstetter, own the two bridge pontoons named "Big John" and "Little John." The boats were fixtures on the Yellowstone River and the Boat Float for over 20 years. Many people all over the United States and Australia were treated to fishing trips, scenic float trips and infamous water fights on the river from the two boat captains. The evergreens that grace Fireman's Park in Laurel were donated by Loyd and Irma. The trees were acquired from the state nursery and planted at the family home for a few years until they were transplanted at Fireman's Park. Loyd continued his lifelong interest in horses by raising Appaloosas. He owned the three-time high point English Horse of the year in the Montana State Appaloosa Club. He and his second wife, Alta, rode their matching appaloosas in the Laurel 4th of July parades and the Herbsfest parades. Santa Claus was one of Loyd's favorite dress-up roles. He enjoyed saying with a booming voice "Ho, Ho, Ho, and Merry Christmas." He played Santa at several parties and family gatherings. He delighted the youngsters of the family by knowing special facts about them. An avid rock hound, Loyd hunted for agates along the Yellowstone, crystal rocks in the mountains, petrified wood and garnets. He also practiced lapidary and made several beautiful pieces of jewelry, mostly out of agates. Many times Loyd would take his family out to the hills to look for various types of rocks. Loyd was an active member of Veteran of Foreign Wars, commander of American Legion-Post 123, 40/8, Laurel Saddle Club-president, National Association of Postmasters of the U.S., president of the Montana Chapter, Eagles, Rod and Gun Club and Laurel Senior Citizen Center. He was in charge of Laurel Cemetery Board, Yellowstone Boat Float association, for several years he and a group of American Legion volunteers set the veteran headstones at the Laurel Cemetery. Many years, Loyd's family and later with Alt,a placed flags on the veteran's headstones for Memorial Day. Loyd is survived by his wife, Alta; and sister, Erma Shay Branstetter; his three children: son, Daryl (Kerry) Shay; daughters, Cindy (Bob) Taylor, Diane (Wayne) Erhart; step sons, Bernie (Marcia) Bray, Ron (Jackie) Bray; and 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceding Loyd in death are his brothers, George Albert, Howard; and sisters, Irene and Carol; and his first wife, Irma; and his parents, Loren and Marie Shay. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, at Laurel United Methodist Church. Interment with military honors will be in Yellowstone County Veterans Cemetery.
