John was born in Forest on 23 August 1893 to John Coultis and Mary Coultis nee McLelland. By 1911 John was working in Thedford as an accountant. He enlisted 04 December 1915. He indicated on his enlistment papers he was active in the 27th Lambton Regiment Militia. He returned to Forest after the war. He died 03 March 1926 from an infection in his arm complicated by diabetes. After the outbreak of the Great War, Charles Foster from the Canadian Bank of Commerce wanted some way to chronicle the war service of the bank staff. He came up with the idea of creating pamphlets, entitled "Letters from the Front", and published 11 of these between August 1915 and January 1919. After the war these letters were collected into a 2 volume set. Volume 1 lists all employees who served , identifying those who died, those wounded and awards. It also includes pictures of all employees who died and (almost) all who received awards; 5 are in Volume 2. The remainder of the book are the letters. Volume 2 contains a biography and war service summary of all employees, including those who served in the BEF or other allied forces. Transferred to 60th Battalion, Victoria Rifles of Canada, 15th June, 1916; 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles, 30th April, 1917. Promoted Lieutenant, 26th August, 1915. Principal actions: Somme, September- October, 1916; Vimy, April, 1917; Valenciennes, Mons, 1918. Wounded (gun shot), in the right knee, Ypres, 9th July, 1916. Returned to duty with the Bank, 8th May, 1919.
