He was born January 4, 1922 in Dowds, Iowa to Robert Bruce McComb and Rilla Saar McComb. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines, Iowa, the same town where, at age 18, he met the love of his life, Thelma Catherine Clark. They married in 1944 and celebrated 68 years of marriage on April 2, 2012. After high school graduation, Bob enrolled at Iowa State College in Ames but his studies were interrupted as a result of WW II. In 1942 he enlisted in the Naval Reserve of the United States Navy. He attended radio school in Washington DC and then Midshipmen School at Notre Dame University, Indiana. Commissioned in 1944 as Ensign, he served as Radio and Sound Repair Officer at the Navy Yard in New York City and later on shipboard. In 1946 he was detached from San Francisco to serve in the Pacific aboard the USS Burius; first positioned in Saipan and then in Japan near the port city of Nagasaki. He elected to leave the US Navy in 1947 with the rank of LT (JG). Bob returned to Iowa State College and graduated in 1948 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He began his career as an engineer at US Steel in Benton Harbor, Indiana. Soon he took a position at Solar Aircraft in Des Moines, Iowa. New opportunities took him to Chicago IL where for the next 26 years he worked for various firms including Argonne National Laboratories. During this time he and his family lived in Naperville, IL. In 1984 he joined the corporate division of Roper Industries. This position took him took him to Baltimore MD and Orangeburg SC. At age 70 he retired to enjoy more time with his cherished family. Always inseparable, Bob and Thelma's retirement years brought them great happiness and allowed them time to visit family and friends. In 1992, Bob and Thelma moved to Governor's Club in Chapel Hill, NC, where Bob designed and drew the plans for the home they built. There he had a studio where he pursued his interest in watercolor painting, creating and coloring many detailed sketches of architectural landmarks, captivating landscapes and garden scenes. He drew and painted many birthday and holiday cards for his children and grandchildren that are family treasures. His hobby of woodworking was a favorite pastime and he produced both functional and whimsical gifts for family and friends. He had special joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren (their beloved Grampi), inspiring each with his creativity, helpful advice, and patience. In 2005, Bob and Thelma moved to the Galloway Ridge retirement community where they forged many new friendships. Surviving Bob are his wife, Thelma Clark Mccomb of Pittsboro; daughter Laurie Mccomb Holst of Westport, CT; daughter Melissa Mccomb Cain and son-in-law, Michael Wilder of Chapel Hill, NC; and son Robert Parks Mccomb and daughter-in-law Jacalyn J. Mccomb of Lubbock, TX; grandchildren Catherine Holst Grimm of Westport, CT; Sarah Holst Alloy of San Francisco, CA; Brendan Michael Cain and Bennett Michael Wilder of Chapel Hill, NC; and great-grandchildren Benjamin and Isabella Grimm and Samuel Alloy. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Bennett McComb of Norfolk, Va. The family wishes to thank Dr. Todd Granger of Chapel Hill Internal Medicine for his dedicated and compassionate ongoing care of Bob; and also the staff of The Arbor at Galloway Ridge, Dr. Gary Winzelberg of UNC Hospitals, and UNC Hospice staff for the comfort and care they provided. A memorial service led by Pastor Bob Dunham will be held Friday, June 22 at 2 PM in University Presbyterian Church, 209 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC.
