The death of Lubbe Ortgies occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Tapken, in Cass township at 6 o'clock last night. For years Mr. Ortgies had been suffering from two strokes of paralysis. The cause of his death was a third stroke. Luebbe Ortgies was a son of Heinrich and Meta(Christophers) Ortgies. He was born in Oldenburg, Germany, Dec. 18, 1848. Next December he would have celebrated his 80th birthday. In his youth he was instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran church of which he remained a member all his life. Mr. Ortgies was a soldier in the German army for three and one- half years, and participated in the Franco-Prussian war in 1870-1871. Following the war, he received a medal in recognition of his services. His marriage to Meta Margareta Eilers occurred at Repsholt, Germany, May 6, 1876. In 1892 he and his family emigrated to the United States, settling in Atlantic county, Illinois, where a brother of Mrs. Ortgies resided. A short time afterward they removed to Davenport, where they lived for two years. They then came to Jones county, and resided in Scotch Grove for a year and in Wayne for two years. Thereafter they purchased a farm in Castle Grove township which was their home until 1914, when they became residents of Monticello. Mrs. Ortgies died thirteen months ago. Since then Mr. Ortgies made his home with his eldest daughter, Mrs. John Tapken, who tried to make her father as comfortable as possible. Mr. and Mrs. Ortgies celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage May 6, 1926. A dinner was given In their honor at the home of their son Louis, in Castle Grove township, which was attended by friends. Rev. O. Sitzler, at that time pastor of St. Peter and Paul's Lutheran church, delivered a congratulatory address on behalf of those present. Mr. Ortgies was the father of seven children, six of whom are living, viz: Henry, Mrs. John Tapken, and Mrs. Henry Ulferts, of Cass township; Mrs. Herman Schaeffer of Castle Grove township; Mrs. Johannes Ulferts, of Cass township, and Louis, of Castle Grove township. One son, Emil, died several years ago of influenza, Mr. Ortgies is also survived by twenty-six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday noon at the Tapken home. The funeral procession will then proceed to the Castle Grove Lutheran church where services will be held in both German and English languages at 1 o'clock. Both services will be in charge of Mr. Ortgies pastor, the Rev. G. Wolf. Burial will be made at the cemetery across from the church.
