She was born June 30, 1862, at Husum in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, to Thomas Brodersen and his wife, Dorthea Martens. She was baptized at Husum in infancy and in her childhood confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Hattstedt, Germany, unto which she remained true to death. At the age of 18 Miss Brodersen came to the United States with her parents, first settling in Wyoming, Iowa. From there they moved to the Midway community. October 23, 1890, she was united in marriage to Fred Strackbein. They farmed near Midway until their retirement to Battle Creek in 1922. Mr. Strackbein preceded his wife in death on August 26, 1924. After her husband's death, she continued living in their home at Battle Creek until about two years ago. Then age and poor health would not permit her living alone. Since then she lived with her children until her hospitalization last November 23, 1949, at Battle Creek. Survivors include her four children: Arnold of Battle Creek, Thomas of Correctionville, Mrs. Frank Hamann and Mrs. Herman Hamann, both of Anthon, 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; and one brother, Tom Brodersen, of St. Paul, Minnesota. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Christiansen Funeral Home in Battle Creek and 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Midway, with Rev. Paul Friedrich officiating. Burial was beside her husband in the Midway cemetery. Pallbearers were six grandchildren: Arthur and Edward Strackbein, Herald, Richard, Donald and Gayland Hamann.
