MARCY ACCIDENTALLY KILLED Lucian J. Marcy, one of the well known citizens of Fairfield, was instantly killed Monday on his farm, near this city, he having been caught under a falling tree. Mr. Marcy was alone at the time of the accident and his body was not found until about 5:30 p.m. Mr. Marcy had left his home here to work on the farm about two o'clock in the afternoon. He has been clearing up a pasture lot. While it was not his custom to cut down a tree without assistance, it appears he decided to fell one Monday. The children of Frank Booth had noticed that a tree was down, but it was not until Mr. Booth was attending to his cattle, about 5:30, that he noticed Mr. Marcy's team standing, and concluding that it was rather late for work in the field, he went out to investigate. Mr. Booth discovered that a good sized tree had fallen on Mr. Marcy and that life appeared to be extinct. Assistance was quickly secured and the tree removed. A physician was summoned and it was ascertained that heavy branches had struck him at the base of the spine and at the neck. Mr. Marcy was fifty-nine years of age, having been born May 20, 1861. He was the son of the late John Marcy, prominent among the early settlers of the county. He was married to Miss Anna J. Cottle on September 15, 1892. Besides his wife he is survived by the following sisters: Mrs. T. P. Stanton of Chariton, Mrs. Paul S. Junkin of Creston, Mrs. Robert F. Wilson, Mrs. Arthur Jordan and Mrs. Cornelia DuBois, all of Fairfield. To say that Lucian Marcy was a man of high character, unimpeachable honesty, keen intellect, and excellent business judgement, a man who cheerfully and unostentatiously (sic) did his duty toward his fellow men, is to say only what is known to the entire community. That he was also a man of high ideals to which he was unswervingly true, that he was charitable in his deeds and in his judgments, that his keen and neverfailing sense of humor was a delight to his friends, these were not so generally known because his was the modesty of true worth and one had to know him well to appreciate his many splendid qualities. Quiet, almost to the point of reticence, his was nevertheless a strong character and it may truthfully be said of him that no man ever won or deserved more fully the entire confidence of the community in which he grew to manhood and spent the years of his maturity. To have lived uprightly, to have wronged none, to have helped many, to have been true to every trust - what more could be asked of any man. These are the things that may justly and with deep sincerity be said of Mr. Marcy.
