Description	:	ANSELMO — Lucile Smets, 88, of Anselmo, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand View Cemetery in Anselmo. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Anselmo-Merna Community Alumni Scholarship Fund. Mrs. Smets was born Sept. 13, 1913, in Anselmo to Clarence and Ina (White) Mallory. She lived her entire life in Anselmo. She was baptized into the Anselmo Christian Church in 1923 and served as the church pianist for many years. She married Howard Smets on Dec. 25, 1934. After graduating from Anselmo High School in 1931, she began attending summer school sessions at Nebraska Teacher's College in Kearney and continued until her graduation from Kearney State College in 1964. In the fall of 1931, she started her teaching career in the Bell School east of Anselmo. She retired from the Anselmo-Merna School in 1983, culminating 50 years of teaching in Custer County. She was honored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a distinguished educator's award. She loved her students and was respected by them. She was a devoted member of the Sunset Rebekah Lodge in Anselmo for more than 60 years. She filled all the offices many times. She received the Degree of Chivalry by her lodge. She served as state president of the Rebekah Assembly of Nebraska in 1986. Following her retirement from school, she enjoyed going to the Smets Cafe, baking pies and attending school functions. Mr. and Mrs. Smets were honored as boosters of the year by the Anselmo-Merna School. She also enjoyed her family, yearly family fishing trips to the Black Hills and attending her grandchildrens' school and 4-H events. Survivors include her husband, a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Don Hardy of Anselmo and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and two half brothers.
