Some have thought that her maiden name might have actually been Corder and that she was a daughter of a Benjamin Corder. Carder and Corder are not two spellings of the same surname. They are totally different surnames of different origins. Researchers of the Carder and Corder families in VA have found the early clerks sometimes mixing up the surnames in records. Richard Allen & Lucinda Corder are listed in neat penmanship as having married 23 May 1815 in Frederick Co., VA. Obviously, the area Carders when Richard & Lucinda married should be researched, too. And because of their ages when they married, something else that needs research is the possibility that this 1815 marriage was a second marriage for both Richard and Lucinda. Could Lucinda's 1815 name have been "Corder" from a first marriage? Harvey Walters, who appears to have been a son of Zephaniah & Martha (Corder) Walters, served with Lucinda's grandson Richard A. Skinner in the Civil War. Based upon the deaths of who served with Richard A. Skinner when he served during the last 11 months of the Civil War, Harvey would have been the unnamed cousin listed is Richard A. Skinner's bio. in Shumway's 1921 "History of Western Nebraska." Zephaniah Walters and Martha Corder were married 5 August. 1841 in Muskingum Co., OH. Was Martha (Corder) Walters the Patsy Walters b. 1815 VA with the Zephaniah Walters family in the 1850 Newton, Muskingum Co., OH census? Was James Walters b. about 1841 listed in that 1850 census Harvey Walters? Zephaniah Walters, including son Harvey, had moved to the Hocking Co., OH where Lucinda lived by the 1860 census. Elizabeth (Walters) Lanning, wife of Hiram Lanning in Hocking Co., OH is thought to have been a daughter of this Zephaniah Walters. Richard & Lucinda Allen farmed in the Moxie (Moxahala) area in Perry Co., OH back when it was good farmland. Richard & Lucinda Allen were in the 1840 Salt Lick Twp., Perry Co., OH census, then Lucinda was a widow in the 1850 Federal census for Hocking Co., Ohio. Lucinda was listed as living in the Asa & Catherine (Pepper) Lanning family in Hocking Co., OH in the 1870 census. Catherine (Pepper) Lanning was listed as her daughter, but because Lucinda was married to Richard Allen when Catherine Pepper was born in West Virginia and Catherine's maiden name was clearly "Pepper," that wouldn't have been possible. Since Lucinda's daughter Elsa "Elcy" Lanning was living with her husband old James Lanning near the Asa Lanning family in 1870, I suspect that the census taker found Lucinda just visiting there. She may have told him that she was living with her daughter and he thought she meant Catherine. Lucinda is in the Hocking Co. death records as having passed away at 95. Shumway's 1925 biography of her grandson Richard A. Skinner in the "History of Western Nebraska," gave her age as 105. Age 95 would have meant that she was about 35 in 1815 when she married Richard Allen. Age 105 would have placed her age as about 45 when she and Richard married. Since she had at least five known children from her marriage to Richard Allen, an age of 95 or less in 1875 makes more sense. Looking at the 1870 Hocking Co. census data for Lucinda Allen and Catherine (Pepper) Lanning, a number of possibilities exist for more research. Lucinda could have been Catherine's grandmother from a marriage before she married Richard Allen. Or, it could just be that Lucinda was living with the Asa Lanning family because her daughter Elsa "Elcy" Allen was the second wife of Asa Lanning's father, old James Lanning, at that time. Asa Lanning was a son of old James Lanning from his first wife Mary "Phlippi" Lanning, who he married in PA.
