Vaughn Held Sunday The final summons came to Mrs. Lucinda Vaughn, pioneer resident of the La Porte City vicinity, Friday afternoon in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Kober, with whom she lived. Mrs. Vaughn passed away at 3:30 while lying down for her afternoon rest. She had been in her usual fair health. Death came one week after her 92nd birthday and was attributed to the effects of old age. She was born Lucinda Dowler, one of twin daughters of Edward and Ann Herbert Dowler, Dec. 2, 1863, near Davenport in Cass county, Iowa and grew to womanhood there. On Dec. 14, 1882, she married Chester Vaughn at Carroll. They operated a general store at Manning for one year before coming to a farm southwest of La Porte City in Benton county, near Mooreville. A few years later they moved onto the Vaughn homestead five miles west of La Porte City in Black Hawk county and farmed there until retiring to reside in La Porte City in 1907. Mr. Vaughn died July 25, 1933. Mrs. Vaughn maintained her own home at 305 Commercial st. after her husband’s death until 1950. Since then she had lived in the Kober home. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by one son, Chester Lee in 1944, a five-year old daughter, three brothers and three sisters. She was the last member of her immediate family. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Kober, 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She had been a member of the Presbyterian church for 50 years and of the Rebekah lodge since 1914. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Johannsen Funeral home by Dr. James W. Bean, pastor of First Presbyterian church. Mrs. Fred Lehmann and Mrs. James W. Bean, accompanied by Mrs. Kirk Mahood, sang “In the Garden” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Casket bearers were members of the I.O.O.F. lodge, C.V. Barnhart, Waterloo and Frank Miller, Pete Miller, Joe Vopelak, Kenneth Clark and Clyde Anton. The body was laid to rest in West View cemetery in the family lot. Relatives and friends who came from out of town for the funeral service were Mr. and Mrs. Kay L. Kober, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Schriever, Margin, Michael and Karen Joyce, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Messer and C. V. Barnhart, Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Link, Sharon, Ellen and Duane, Mason City and Edward Refschauge, Cedar Falls.
