They had 6 known Strain children:
John Simmons, 1836 below Elias "Eli" Franklin, 1839 below Mary Elizabeth, abt 1840 to ?, (David W. Corbin) David Allen, 11 Apr 1846 below James A. "Jessie," abt 1848 - bef 19 Dec 1900, (Nancy J) Anna Laura, abt 1861 (Alexander H Kelley) below
Her mother Elizabeth and her siblings were on the 1850 Walnut, Montgomery Co., IN census: Farmer and brother, John Simmons, 27, IN born; Rebecca Simmons, 24, VA; William Simmons, 6, IN; Hannah Simmons, 4, IN; Eliza A Simmons, 3, IN; Joseph Simmons, 1, IN and (mother) Elizabeth Simmons, 68, NC born.
On the 17 Aug 1850 Walnut Twp., Indiana Census for Montgomery County, I found farmer James Strain, age 40, born in VA and living with him were these Strains, all born in Indiana: Lucinda, 32; John S., 13; Elias F., 11; Mary E., 10; David A., 4 and James A., 2.
On 20 Feb 1854, husband James Strain purchased land in Walnut Twp., Montgomery County, Indiana, Book 20, p 132. It was sold to him by wife Lucinda's younger brother, John Simmons, Jr., John and Sarah Bowman Sr., plus Robt and Nancy Burk, for $1200.
Lucinda's mother Elizabeth Farlow Simmons is believed to have died in 1857, in Montgomery Co., IN (see connection below).
On the 1860 Ladoga P.O., in Walnut, Montgomery Co., IN census, I found farmer James Strain, 50, VA born, with $2000. in real estate and $706. in personal property; Lucinda Strain, 43, IN; David A. Strain, 14, IN; James A. Strain, 12, IN; master carpenter David Corbin, 24, KY, with $170. in personal property and (daughter) Mary E. Corbin, 20, IN and Samuel W. Corbin, 9/12, IN born.
On "24 Feb 1862," a "James Strain" enlisted in Boonville, IN, as a private in Indiana Company I, 53rd Infantry and mustered out on 27 Mar 1865. In 1862, he would have been about 14. Later, widow Nancy J Strain and minor Nancy J. Warington or Wasington, are listed on a US Pension record under James Strain, Co. I, 53rd Indiana Infantry. He also filed in IN on 17 Oct 1882 as an invalid; widow in AR on 19 Dec 1900 and minor on 30 Jul 1903 in IN, with application and certificate numbers.
Citizen, Lucinda Strain, is mentioned in a confederate paper "relating to citizens or business firms." Fold3 has it. It may have to do with her sons who served, though they were Union soldiers.
No idea why they left Indiana, for Arkansas, but Lucinda's brother John N Simmons, Jr. was already in Madison Co., Arkansas by 1867.
On the 20 Aug 1870 Huntsville P.O., War Eagle Twp., Madison Co., AR census, I found farmer James Strain, 70, VA born with $100 in real estate; Lucinda keeping house, 64, VA; at school, Ann Strain, 9, IN born.
It appears Lucinda died following the 20 Aug 1870 census and before the 10 Jun 1880 census, when her husband was a widower on the DeRoan Twp., Hempstead Co., Arkansas census, residing with daughter Ann Laura, 19, and then he disappears. I assume both Lucinda and James died in Arkansas and are buried there (unless it was Indiana), but their burial location and exact dates are unknown as yet. Seek data.
Could not locate a will, probate record or obit in Arkansas or Indiana for Lucinda, with existing sources.
I'm so grateful to my lovely cousin, FWCS, for sharing this sketch of Lucinda (see photo). It was given to her by cousin HSF, who believed this was the mother of David Allen Strain and Annie Laurie Strain, etc. She had her labeled as "Mary Allen, mother of David and Annie," but she had the wrong name on it. "Born in Indiana died in Arkansas, reared a large family." The same can be said for Lucinda. It's not 100% but it's another clue in their ancestry. This picture was on the wall in the old family home in Georgia.
MAB shared her death date and place, 1818 to 20 Aug 1870 in Arkansas. Yet she was on the War Eagle Twp., Madison Co., Arkansas census above, on the same date in 1870. Awaiting documentation but none received.
