Read More	87 years after her death, Lucretia Deering remembered At the time Lucretia Deering, wife of Nathaniel Cobb Deering, died in 1919, she had outlived her husband, three sisters and step-daughter. She had no children of her own and her nieces had long since married and moved away. There was no one to see to her affairs and no one who even cared whether her death information was recorded on her final resting place in the Osage cemetery. Thanks to Velda and John LaCoste, who currently live in the historic Deering home, descendants of Lucretia's family members and the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Republic (D.A.R.) that wrong was made right, 87 years after her death, at a memorial dedication at the cemetery. Nathaniel C. Deering first married Catherine Bailey, Lucretia's oldest sister, and the couple had one daughter, Katie Bailey Deering. Catherine contracted tuberculosis and died when Katie was one-year-old. A year later Nathaniel married Lucretia and throughout their 31 year marriage the couple had no children of their own. When Lucretia's parents died in 1860 they left behind four young children. Lucretia and Nathaniel became wards of her two sisters, Caroline "Carrie" Bailey and Mary Evelyn Bailey. Lucretia's older brother William took charge of his two little brothers, Charles and Allen. Much was written about Nathaniel Deering after he moved his family west to Osage, how he started a lumber mill, made several lucrative land transactions and became the first Mitchell County citizen to be voted into the U.S. House of Representatives under President Abraham Lincoln. But not much was known about his wife, who only warranted a death notice in the paper. It was through extensive research into the lives of this Osage pioneer family, by Velda LaCoste who was making application to have their house on he National Registry of Historic Places, that Lucretia's story became known. As Velda "read between the lines" in history books she learned Lucretia was a strong, pioneer woman. She was only 29 years-old when the Deering family traveled to Osage from Maine with a very ill husband, and three little girls in tow. There weren't even any roads to travel on after they crossed the Mississippi River. The Deerings were very poor when they arrived in Osage. Nathaniel had lost everything when his paper manufacturing company in Maine burned to the ground the previous year. They were so poor that Lucretia and Katie went barefoot and clothes came from a missionary's barrel that was sent from out east. The family's first Osage home was a shack built next to the Deering Mill located west of town along the Cedar River. After a time family finances improved greatly due to the success of the mill and Nathaniel's blossoming political life. During this time Lucretia probably worked right along side him and supported him. Lucretia became an active volunteer in many community organizations including the Shakespearean Club and the Red Cross. While the couple lived in Washington D.C. she became a member of the D.A. R. When the Osage D.A.R. chapter was organized in 1927 they chose to name their chapter after Lucretia although she was never an official member of the Osage chapter. During the Deering's tenure at the nation's capital Lucretia was, "considered the finest hostess," according to Bonnie Ahrens who heard the stories from her husband Frank's grandmother Katherine Annis, a daughter to Mary Evelyn and niece of Lucretia. Lucretia played hostess to President Lincoln himself as well as members of his cabinet. The family monument was finally engraved with Lucretia's information last fall after John Bailey, a descendant of her youngest brother Allen discovered the omission when he visited the cemetery on Memorial Day 2005. Genealogical research had already connected him to Frank and Bonnie Ahrens. John's parents, Don and Marlyce Bailey, and the Ahrens' agreed to fund the engraving and Velda LaCoste agreed to take care of the arrangements. At the memorial service on Saturday, July 1, descendants of Lucretia's sister and brother, John and Velda LaCoste and D.A.R. members were present to honor this strong pioneer family and gracious lady.
