Obituary - 1937 Eureka Herald Lucy Brandon DeVier , daughter of Ewing and Martha DeVier, was born Oct. 14, 1847, near Staunton, Harlan County, Va. and died Jan. 25, 1937, at her home on North Elm street, Eureka , Kansas, at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 11 days. She was married to Lucius A. Devier at McDowell, Virginia, on August 23,1865, and came to Kansas a few years later where she has since resided. R. Devier preceeded her in death seven years . They had been married for sixty four years at the time of his death. She attended the public grade schools in McDowell, then was graduated from the Mary Baldwin Seminary at Staunton and after her graduation taught in a select school there. When a young girl, she united with the Mossey Creek Presbyterian church. On August 23, 1865, she was united in marriage to Lucias A. DeVier, in Richmond, Va. They were the parents of nine daughters, all of whom are living. The daughters are: Mrs Daisy McIntosch, Modesta; Mrs. Kate Pettijohn, Penrose, Colo. ; Mrs. Ruby Benson, Chicago; Mrs. Olive Whitehead, Matfield Green, Kansas; Mrs Virginia Bobbitt, Seattle, Washington; Miss. Mamie DeVier and Mrs. Grace Fraser, of Euraka, Kansas; Mrs. Vera Johnson, of ElDorado; and Mrs. Sidney Jackson of Augusta, (Va.). Twelve grandchildren and seven g-grand children. Furneral service was conducted from the Baird Funeral Home at oclock Wednesday afternoon, by Rev. M. E. Will of the First Christrian Church , Interment in Greenwood Cem. The obit lists her city of birth as Staunton and the County as Harlan. Staunton is in Augusta County. Lucius was a cousin - hence the same last names.
