A few years later my grandfather was caught in a blizzard and froze to death. A little old man I met one time told me his family lived neighbors to grandfather, he being a nine year old boy at the time. They found him after the blizzard. But my brother Tom told me when I saw him the last time our father told him they didn't find grandfather until spring. Father never talked much about it, he was 12 or 13 year old at the time. Grandfather never got lost. They found his gun about 1/2 mile from where they found him. He was coming in a straight line for home. Father said it was a beautiful day when grandfather took his gun and said he was going into Bassett to pay his taxes, which he did, a distance of 10 miles or so. He walked which no one thought much of in those days as men done a lot of walking. The blizzard struck when he was coming home. He got within a half mile of home. He had dropped his gun and some toys and candy he had brought for the children, a half mile or so farther back from where they found him. My father once said he and his two brothers were doing the chores when the storm struck. They had a sod house, chicken house and barn. There was a rope, which went from the house to the chicken house then to the barn. There was no fences. This was so they wouldn't get mixed up and could always follow the rope to the house. Father said they would never have got to the house without the rope to follow. They tell you now days no one turns gray-haired over night. Aunt Dolly, Uncle Bill, Uncle Joe and my father said grandmother turned gray that night. They had a little piece of glass in the door; she kept scratching the frost off to see out. She didn't dare let any of the boys go look for their father. They never would have lived very long out in the blizzard. They lived on this homestead for a while, then grandmother traded it for a home in Palmyra, Nebraska. Grandfather was buried on the homestead, also a baby girl that died that spring. My father and uncles went back after they were older, but could never find just where it was. In those days the sandhill country could change it's looks as well as the shape of its sandhill in a windstorm."
