Description	:	Lucy Close, daughter of Edward Thomas (Theodore) and Dora Close, was born November 17, 1898, near Promise City, Iowa. She grew to womanhood in this community and was married to Floyd Gates in the spring of 1917(April 5). She grew to womanhood in this community and was married to Floyd Gates in the spring of 1917(April 5). Eleven children were born to this union, ten living, one dead, which are as follows: Lester, who passed away at age 14 years, Leonard, Don, Doyle, Edgar, Colus, Wayne, Cleo, Glendale, Marvin and Lois. A short time after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Gates moved to the state of Montana and here they spent a number of years owning and operating their own ranch. They sold out after a number of years and came back to Iowa. Then after some little time they again went back to Montana, but did not live there for long. In the spring of 1934 the family moved to Centerville and made this their home since the previously stated date. Mrs. Gates departed this life at her home on West State St. Thursday afternoon at about 3:30, November 14, 1940 being at the time of her death, 41 years, 11 months, and 27 days of age. In death she is survived by her ten children, her mother, Mrs. Dora Close, of Promise City, one brother, Glen Close, of Davenport, Iowa, one Half-brother, Howard Jones, of Promise City and one sister Mrs. Mernie Simms, of Centerville. Several years ago Mrs. Gates united with the Christian Church at Promise City and during the recent revival at the First Baptist Church she transferred her church membership to the Baptist Faith.
