Description	:	Funeral services will be Tuesday for Lucy Mary Brawn, a member of a pioneer Santa Cruz County family who died Friday at the age of 96. She was a lifelong resident of Santa Cruz County. She was a member of the Thomas Howell family, which settled on a small farm on Rodeo Gulch Road in the 1860s. She was born in 1882, the youngest of 16 children. Scofield of Watsonville; eight great-grandchildren, 10 great- great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild. Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Wessendorf and Holmes Funeral Chapel, 223 Church St., with the Rev. Gary Wells of the Garfield Park Christian Church officiating. Friends may call at the mortuary Monday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to pay their respects. Interment will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. No flowers a covered the walls or hid the pictures from view; the soft strains of music were not wafted from the room to the ears of the crowd that stood expectantly waiting; to see the couple handsome women, gaily attired, did not fill the room where the ceremony was performed, nor did gallant men in full dress add their presence to the matrimonial affair which occurred in this city at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. None of the accessories to a fashionable wedding were seen. Instead of merriment and joy there was a different scene. The wedding took place in Sheriff Besse's private office at the hour named. Instead of the joyous peals of wedding bells there were heard the clanging of bolts and the shutting of the heavy iron door as it closed behind the prisoner who had emerged from his cell to make the girl who was waiting for him in the Sheriff's office his wife. The prisoner, Robert De Witt, and the girl, Lucy Howell, only 15 years old, were soon united in the bonds of matrimony by Justice Craghill. Only the bride's mother, the groom's sister, Under-Sheriff Helms, County Treasurer Bias and a few others were present to lend eclat to the occasion or make the usual matrimonial toasts, if necessary. After Justice Craghill had performed the ceremony the groom returned to his cell, while the bride returned to her home in Doyle Gulch, there to await the time when her husband would be released from jail. The only wedding breakfast he bad was that served by Dan Wente, the caterer at the county jail. Dan never furnishes wine to his "patrons," and did not do so on this occasion. He did not even have a wedding cake, for he has long since lost all sentiment. Had be known of the wedding, or had been among the "invited guests," he might have added a delicacy or two, but as he was not informed the groom had to be deprived of such luxury as Dan could have afford him. De Witt is charged with rape, the girl whom he married being the complaining witness. Now that he is married it is likely that all further proceedings will be dropped.
