The Rev. Lugene Bazuin, pastor, was in charge of the last rites. Burial was made in the family lot in Evergreen cemetery at Britt. Ludwig Smidt was born Sept. 25, 1865, at Weener, Prussia, Germany, a son to Henry and Antji Broush-Smidt. While an infant he was baptized, and at an early age was confirmed. His education was received in his native land. At the age of 16 years he came to this country, first making his home in Illinois, then later moved to Aplington, Iowa. In 1893 he was married to Miss Emma Green. The couple established a home on a farm near Ackley, Iowa, where they farmed for a number of years. Two children, Sena and Emo, blessed this union. In 1897, Mrs. Smidt died. In 1898, Mr. Smidt married Miss Lena Heerkes, the wedding taking place at Hampton. In 1902 the Smidt family moved to their present home in Erin township. Seven children blessed this union: Anton, Ole L., Henry, Louie, George, Anna and Alice. Mr. and Mrs. Smidt also reared a brother of Mrs. Smidt, Ben Heerkes, having taken him in infancy after death had entered that home. Mr. Smidt took an active interest in community life. He was an ardent worker and a member of the Christian Reformed Church, and received comfort in doing for others. He had been active thru-out his entire life, but due to his age had been somewhat retired for the past few years. A week ago he suffered a heart attack which caused him to be confined to his bed. Thursday night, Nov. 13 he passed away at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 18 days. Surviving Mr. Smidt are his wife, Lena, the children, Sena, wife of the late John Sweers; Emo, Anton, Henry, Louie, George and Anna; four daughters-in-law, the brother-in-law, Ben Heerkes; 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one sister, Florence (Mrs. Betten), Kanawha, as well as other relatives. Mr. Smidt was preceded in death by the daughter Alice in 1942, and by a son, Ole L. in 1947, also three brothers, Henry, Gerhard and Hensman, and one sister, Helen (Mrs. John Behrends).
