Obit written by Jean Owens: Luella LaJune Cover Kelly Bunch, age 84 years, 4 months, and 29 days of Leon, Decatur Co., IA was born June 1, 1923 nine miles northwest of Eagle Butte, Dewey Co., SD to Alfred Oliver and Stella Martha Merrick Cover. She passed away October 30, 2007 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, IA. Luella loved her childhood on the prairie with her seven brothers and sisters and had many stories to tell. She was a tomboy and enjoyed being outside with the animals and nature. She shadowed her father whenever possible. When Luella was seven years old, the family visited relatives in Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri in a Model T. When she was ten in 1933 the family moved to Lamoni, Decatur Co., IA. She enjoyed attending school there and had many friends. Luella did not graduate with her class in 1941; however received her High School Equivalency Certificate in December of 1965.She was very proud of this achievement. Through the years she attended many class and school reunions and remained in touch with many of her former class mates. She was baptized into the RLDS Church on June 07, 1935 by D Blair Jensen and confirmed by Walter Johnson and F. N. Mortimore. On March 25, 1941 Luella married Neil Kelly at Mt. Ayr, Ringgold Co., IA; five children were born to this union, Ruby Jean, Larry Neil, Gloria Dianne, Jerry Lynn, and Ginger Lee. After living in Decatur City and Van Wert, the family moved to a new house in Leon in 1954. Luella lived there until 2002 when she moved due to health reasons. Over the years she worked as a post office clerk in Van Wert from 1948-1954, at Hanaco Café in the 1960's and in 1966 began working as a Center Aide at the Decatur County Community Center in Leon for SCICAP. On July 16, 1967 she married Lewis George Bunch; they were happily married until his death in 1982. Luella retired from SCICAP in February 1984 after having contributed much to the community programs for Decatur County. During her retirement years she enjoyed traveling, reading, quilting, visiting with family and friends, and working on family history. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter Gloria Dianne; brothers Charles, Vernon, Lyman, and two infants, Elbert and John; sister Pearl Yancey Kelley; brothers-in-law Robert Smith, Raymond "Short" Dyer, James Bunch, and Marion Bunch. She is survived by her four children; Jean and Clyde Marion Owens of Indianola, Iowa; Larry and Ruth Kelly of Montesano, Washington; Jerry and Sue Kelly, Kansas City, Missouri; and Ginger and Bill Dutemple of New Virginia, Iowa; grandchildren : Jodi Lynn Owens Bradshaw & Tom; Daniel Joseph Owens & Jody; Beckie Kelly Nicoson & Gary; Joel Kelly and Brandi McClaran; great grandchildren: Nicholas, Valerie, and Tommy Bradshaw; Courtney & Bailey Owens; Tory, Paige, Trevor, and Stormi Nicoson; two great, great grandchildren; sisters: Gladys Clingingsmith of South Dakota; Ruth Swenson of Des Moines, Iowa, Ruby Smith of Lamoni, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
