Ruby died August 2, 2020, in Lamoni, Iowa, at age 87. In fall of 1933, Ruby and family moved to Lamoni, Iowa, leaving their homestead at Eagle Butte, South Dakota, due to drouth and grasshoppers. At the age of 9, she was baptized in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS) in the Lamoni Coliseum. She attended and graduated from Lamoni High School, then went to Graceland College and received an Associate of Arts degree. She worked as assistant bookkeeper and cashier at Graceland until her marriage. On March 14, 1954, Ruby married Robert Wayne Smith at the Lamoni RLDS Church. To this union three children were born: Garrett Wayne, Debra Kay, and Susan Lynne. Ruby spent most of her married life on the farm as a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and bicycling. The family lived in Arizona and Colorado for 3 years, 1960 to 1962. She enjoyed going on the bus for the Day Trips around Iowa with the Leon Bank. She moved to Crown Colony at Lamoni in September 2000. There she played many games with the residents, cards, dominoes and Rummikub. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Bob, of 45 years; two infant brothers, Elbert Jessie and John Wesley, also brothers Charles Alfred, Vernon Franklin, and Lyman Kover; sisters, Pearl Katherine Kelley, Ruth Swenson, Luella Bunch, and Gladys Clingingsmith. Survivors included three children: Garrett of Leon, Iowa; Debra Silver and husband Stuart of Lamoni, Iowa; Susan Smith-Vice and husband Keith of Coos Bay, Oregon; five grandchildren: Abigail, Nathaniel, Melissa, and Samantha Silver and Allyson Higgins; and two great grandchildren: Drayton Chase Higgins and Kaden Aleckzander Higgins.
