She passed away May 17, 2021 at age 90. Lu is survived by her son, Kent Sluiter, daughter-in-law, Kären, granddaughter's Adrienne and Hannah, her brother Luvern (Sonny) Qualm, and sister-in-law LaVonne Qualm, sister-in-law Audrey Sluiter Jones, Charlie Jones and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Floyd Sluiter, daughter, Kay Sluiter Fife, sister, Louise Johnson, brother-in-law Vernell Johnson and parents John and Bernice Qualm. Lu grew up in Platte, a small town in South Dakota where she met, and ultimately married, her high school sweetheart, Floyd Sluiter. Floyd and Lu moved to Santa Cruz in 1959 with their two small children, Kent and Kay, eventually settling in Capitola in 1963 where Lu worked for many years as an instructional aide at Soquel Elementary school. Lu had a reputation among her many friends as a skilled gardener and craft maker and purveyor of delicious treats. She enjoyed spending time with her family, particularly her two granddaughters, and loved spending time tending her flower garden as well as being a loving "kitty-mom" to her fur-babies over the years. She was very involved in her Church and enjoyed the many friends she made there. A memorial service will be held at 11am, Saturday, June 5th at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, 2500 Soquel Avenue, Santa Cruz. Private interment at Oakwood Memorial Park to follow. In lieu of flowers, the Sluiter family asks that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Santa Cruz SPCA, Blackie's Fund, 2601 Chanticleer Avenue, Santa Cruz, CA 95065.
