Goddard, one of the well known farmers of Freedom township, passed away at his home northeast of this city on Monday. He was ill for some time, though few in this locality had learned of the seriousness of his condition. The funeral will be held today. Services will be conducted at the M.E. church at 2 o'clock. The pastor, Rev. Norman McCay, will officiate. The burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The pall bearers chosen are Robert Henderson, Ole Haag, William Bell, L. Canham, James Sharp and M. Dickinson. Luichen Watson Goddard was born at Ancona, Illinois, October 2, 1858. He was rounding out his sixty-third year. He grew to manhood in his native state. Mr. Goddard came to Emmetsburg in 1889. November 25, 1891, he was united in marriage to Annie Caroline McBride of this place. Mr. and Mrs. Goddard moved to Illinois the following year where they resided until 1904, when they returned to this locality. They subsequently made their home on farms in this neighborhood.Seven sons and one daughter were born to Mr. and Mrs. Goddard. All, with Mrs. Goddard, are living. The sons are Thomas V., Orville C., Fred L., Ray A., Jesse L., Frank A., and Glen M. The only daughter is Miss Mildred Lucile. All of the members of the family live in this locality except Fred L., who lives in Gardner, North Dakota. There are three grandchildren. Mr. Goddard's aged mother, one brother, two step brothers and a step sister are also living. Mr. Goddard was an industrious, frugal, upright gentleman and was an exemplary citizen. He was quiet and unassuming and gave close attention to his own affairs. He was a good farmer, and he was esteemed by his friends and neighbors. He was courteous and obliging, and he had a proper regard for the the wishes and the rights aong whom he mingled socially and in other ways. The writer became acquainted with him when he first came to Emmetsburg thirty-two years ago, and we always appreciated his loyal friendship and his ardent support. His death is a loss to his home community and to our county as well as to his devoted wife and worthy family. General and profound sympathy goes out to them in the great loss they have sustained.
