Ray A. Goddard, well know Emmetsburg and Ruthven citizen, died at his home near Ruthven early Thursday morning of last week. Mr. Goddard was 41 years of age at the time of his passing. He had been in ill health for some time. Funeral rites were conducted in the Sacred Heart church at Ruthven at 9:30 o'clock Saturday morning. A requiem Mass was celebrated by the pastor, Rev. E.L. McEvoy. During the ceremony the choir rendered two hymns, "Dear Sacred Heart" and "Nearer My God To Thee." Interment was in the Evergreen cemetery at Emmetsburg. The active pall bearers were Alden Hermansen, Tom Goeders, Leslie Dickinson, Allen Adamson, Iver Holmgren and George Harrison. Honorary pall bearers were Carl Norblad, Clarence Loomis, Dan Green, Walter Miller, Albert Hermansen and Henry Joynt. In his youth, he was baptized into the Methodist church, but he died with the rites of the Catholic church. Ray A. Goddard was born in Cornell, Ill., on August 21, 1897. When he was 7 years of age his parents and the family moved to Emmetsburg. In 1920, Mr. Goddard was united in marriage to Miss Marcella Foy of Emmetsburg. The happy couple farmed near Cylinder for about six years and since that time have followed the farming occupation on their place between Ruthven and Ayrshire. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Goddard. All survive. They are Mary Jean and Lois, William, Joseph, Junior, Robert and James. There are also seven brothers and sisters. They are Thomas Goddard, Streator, Ill.; Orville, Emmetsburg; Fred, Laurens; Jess, Blue Island, Ill.; Frank, Cylinder; Glen, Emmetsburg, and Miss Mildred Goddard, Houston, Texas, all besides their mother, Mrs. Anna Goddard of Emmetsburg, survive. Among those from a distance who were present at the funeral were Mrs. Mary Conway and Mr. and Mrs. Theil of Britt, Mrs. C. Gossman, Mrs. Marguerite Calkins and son Ray, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Foy, Mrs. Mary Steil, Mrs. P.L. Godden and Mrs. Gappa, all of Emmetsburg, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Tyndall of Graettinger.
