Mrs Whirry died in Mason city tuesday after failing health for many years. She had made her home with her daughter, Mrs Ralph Smiley, for some time. Beause of Mrs Smiley's illness, the rites were set for Friday when she hopes to be present. Born in Prairie Hill, Iowa May 7, 1872, Mrs Whirry was the former Lulu Belle Starr, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs David Starr. On June 30, 1897 she was married to Professor John Whirry in Emmetsburg and the young couple moved to Osage where Prof Whirry was an instructor. They lived there until 1900. Mr Whirry died many years ago and Mrs Whirry made her home in Emmetsburg, residing here until a few years ago. For many years she was employed as a private secretary for E.G. Saunders and later she was in the office of Henry Willingham. At her husbands death, Mrs Whirry was left with 4 young daughters to raise and educate and this she did in a conscientious and commendable way. Mrs Whirry provided a comfortable home for her family where their friends were always welcome. She was a member of the Congregation church. In 1940 her health began to fail and she gave up some of her customary activities and spent much time with her daughters and their families. Surviving are her daughters: Mrs Smiley, the former Irene Whirry of Mason City; Miss Essie Whirry, Des Moines teacher; Mrs Frank Lewis of Burlington, who was the former Olive Whirry; and Mrs P.O. Nelson (Eva) of Emmetsburg. Also surviving are her sisters: Mrs D.L. Johnson and Mrs W.C. Richardson, and a brother Carl Starr, all of Emmetsburg, and another brother, Dr. C.F. Starr of Mason City. A sister, Edith Moore, preceded her in death. There are 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
