Brereton - David Starr passed away at his home in this city at 6:45 o'clock Saturday evening. He was stricken with hemorrhage of the brain Friday noon and immediately became unconscious from which he did not recover. Mr Starr passed his eighty-seventh birthday the twelfth of last October. He began his lifes journey in the parental home of Jesse and Lucinda Starr in Brooklyn, Canada. There he tarried for eleven years; in Dane county, Wisconsin, nine years; twenty years in Jones county, Iowa; and forty-seven years in Palo Alto county. It was in 1881 that he made a new home on the virgin prairie soil in Vernon township, this county. For the last thirty-seven years his home was in this city. When twenty years old Mr. Starr enlisted in the defense of the republic, being enrolled in Company E of the 31st Infantry. Shortly after enrollment he was seriously ill and was at the intervention of his father, returned to his home. Later he rejoined the army in the same company and regiment. He was with Sherman in the great march to the sea. It was his privilege to be with the triumphal army in its notable parade in Washington. He was, during his residence in this county, a member of Henry Dillon Post, G. A. R. He served as commander for several years and he also held other positions of importance and honor in the organization. His membership was very much appreciated by his many old comrades. He was united in marriage, on December 11, 1866, with Lovica Danks. To them six children were born — Carl S. of Emmetsburg, Mrs. Edith L. Moore of Oxford, Nebraska, Mrs Lulu B. Whirry of Emmetsburg, Dr Charles Freeman Starr of Mason City, Mrs. Sadie Richardson of Emmetsburg, and Mrs. Susan L. Johnson of Emmetsburg, all of whom survive their fathers death. His wife, mother of his sons and daughters, died November 9, 1882. On Octobe 28, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Amy E. Humphrey, who survives him. Mr. Starr's death is also mourned by a sister, Mrs. J.C. Bake of Emmetsburg, and a brother, B.K. Starr, who lives in North Dakota. This is a brief record of the date and outstanding events of a long an useful1 life. Mr. Starr was first and always an upright man. His integrity in business affairs was never questioned. His cleanness in domestic and social relations was apparent to all. He and his dear companion kept a splendid home out of which went sons and daughters who rise up to call him blessed. His nelghborliness was a marked trait. He believed that he was in the world to touch his neighborhood with helpful ministries. His self sacrificing spirit in relation to nearby folks extended far. His devotion to country manifested by his enlistment for her defense before he had attained his majority was characteristic of his whole life. He was a true patriot. He was always interested in anything pertaining to public welfare in his city, state and nation. Before citizenship and all else David Starr was a Christian. It is this that explains his success in home building and home keeping and that explains his wholesome influence over all life about him. The precious memories of his dear wife now stricken in grief and of his children are precious indeed because he tried falteringly and sometimes with failure, of course, to live the life of his Saviour in the world. While in his teens he acknowledged his need of the Saviour and consecrated himself to him for a life of Christian testimony and Christian serves. He immediately united with the Baptist church at Rutland, Dane county, Wisconsin. A little while after coming to this city, he transferred his membership from a little Baptist church in Vernon township to the Congregational church here. He was a stalwart man among the membership of his church. The testimony of his words and his life among us had no uncertain ring. We always knew that he stood for every good thing and worth while purpose of the church. He was always loyal, loyal to the minister, loyal in matters of financial support, loyal in the matter of personal attendance at the services of Gods house. We share keenly the grief which bows down the dear wife and children and, as best we can, we will lift the sorrow from their hearts. The pastor, Rev. J.W. Barker, assisted by Rev. J.E. Brereton, officiated. The pall bearers were two sons: Carl Starr of this city and Dr Freeman Starr of Mason City; and two sons-in-law W.C. Richardson and D.L. Johnson; and two grandsons, Clyde Richardson and Harold Johnson.
