Julie Busch, the granddaughter of George Howe, told me that when she became a widow, Lulu paid to have her sons stay at an orphanage while she took a trip to Ireland to visit relatives. Lulu was late in getting back to pick them up, so the orphanage put them on a train to Nebraska either for adoption or to work for the summer. When Lulu realized the mistake, she got on a train to Nebraska to find them. One son, Frank Howe, had left the train on his own, but she caught up with the other three boys in Nebraska. Moses Galbraith, who was a kind deacon in his Presbyterian church and a widower, had taken the boys in to work on his farm. Lulu then accepted a job as a housekeeper for Moses. It wasn't very long before Moses proposed marriage. Lulu was also an Aunt of Walter Galbraith's first wife Mary Lulu (Brown) Galbraith. Lulu Jane (Iles) Howe was a sister of Mary Lulu (Brown) Galbraith's mother Mary Anna (Iles) Brown. Lulu was in the 1870 and 1880 New York census records for the widow Mary Iles in New York City. On 1 Oct. 1880 in Manhattan, NY, Lulu married William Howe. She married Moses "Rob" Galbraith on 27 Oct. 1899 in Grandview, Colfax Co., NE . After the turn of the century, Lulu had a son George Howe from her first marriage living near Schuyler in Nebraska . Lulu's three sons John Howe, William Howe, and George W. Howe were living with Lulu and Rob Galbraith along with his children Walter, Myra, and Mabel in the 1900 Grant & Salt Creek Precincts, Colfax Co., NE census. PBS sometimes shows a documentary called Orphan Trains. They were trains that took boys who were either orphans or from disadvantaged homes, such as where the parents might be alcoholics, from NYC to rural communities throughout the country to be adopted. The documentary mentions Schuyler as one of those communities. It showed that according to the Schuyler newspaper, Moses & Lulu Galbraith, as well as Lulu's son John Howe, were on a committee in Schuyler to help find people in that area to adopt those boys. In the Schuyler Cemetery, Lulu was buried in the Galbraith plot. Her son William Thomas Howe, who died at about 20 in 1909 is buried on one side of her and her husband Moses "Rob" Galbraith is buried on the other side. Ancestry.com had her baptism record, showing that she was baptised in a Methodist church on 26 Nov. 1858 in NYC.
