Description	:	Louis [sic] Stipes, operator of the NuWay shoe shop on East Jackson for the last eight years, died today at his home, 421 South Walnut. He was 68 years old. Survivors include his widow, who lives here, and three children living elsewhere. Funeral arrangements will be made later. Graves in Big Springs, Tex., after a visit with the Ukena family in Amarillo. Iola Register October 1, 1936 Luther was this writers great grandfather, at least legally. There is not much I know besides the facts the various documents present. He was married 3 times. Most of my knowledge of the family came from the wife of a 2nd cousin, once removed, and she did not know the exact details of his death. Only when a further distant relation of the Stipes asked for stories, did I find this record. I keep the newspaper articles for references, since they provide the best knowledge of Luther’s later life. He married Blanche Susan Crane, on January 23, 1901, in Marshall, Missouri. They had a natural daughter on December 1, 1901, she died the same day. Blanche reported to my mother that she had 2-3 other miscarriages before they decided to adopt. On April 13, 1906, they adopted Lynn Carlyle, naming him Lowell Westport Stipes. Then on February 1, 1908, the divorce with Blanche was finalized. Luther had not showed up to court that day. According to the court documents, he had filled for divorce first, then Blanche counter filed. The court ruled that Blanche was the wronged party, and finalized the divorce, granting Blanche full custody of Lowell. As far as the family of Lowell knows, there was not any further contact or communication between Luther and Lowell. Blanche did not speak of Luther to her son and his children. There was contact with the Stipes family, as Horace, Luther’s older brother was married to Annie Crane, Blanche’s older sister. Luther’s 1910 census shows he was then married to Ida. This marriage produced a daughter, Vera Mae, born in 1911, in Caldwell, Kansas.
