Description	:	Born September 4, 1905, (although the marker incorrectly says September 5), in Strasburg, Cass County, Missouri, and given the name of Lynn Carlyle. He had a twin brother believed to have been named Glenn. Their mother died on September 10, 1905. His natural father, William, had a house full of ten other children with three less than five. He had a twin brother believed to have been named Glenn. Their mother died on September 10, 1905. His natural father, William, had a house full of ten other children with three less than five. Having no family that could take the two infants, he chooses to place them in the Westport orphanage in Olathe, Kansas. (The twin brother died in the orphanage.) Young Lynn was adopted by Luther F and Blanche Susan Crane Stipes, on April 13, 1906, in Lexington, Missouri, and renamed Lowell Westport Stipes. His middle name was in honor of the orphanage. Within a few months of the adoption, Luther filled for divorce and left. Luther and Blanch were divorced on February 1, 1908, in Marshall, Missouri. As far as is known Luther never made any contact with Lowell after this. Lowell lived with his mother, her parents, Oscar and Sophie, and her siblings' Joseph and Grace or 'Tippa.' While in his teens, he started working for farmer Robert and his son Dean Ham. One or both of them did not think they could call out Lowell all the time, so they named him 'Jack.' That was his name ever since, and most persons not knowing who Lowell W. was, but they knew Jack. On November 26, 1930, Jack married Nettie Lee Garrett. They had four children, (two still living in 2020). When Nettie's grandmother died in 1933, her two younger siblings' Orville Wilber 'Bill' and Cecil Mae were without a home. Jack agreed to take these young teenagers in. In later years, Blanche moved in with Jack and Nettie until few months before her death in 1956. Jack was a tenant farmer. The family usually moved every few years as the farm demands. Jack also broke mules and worked with the county road department grading the roadbed and ditches. Jack sold out the farm in 1950, and moved to Slater. He began working at the Marshall State School and Hospital. To start he had to produce his birth certificate, and he showed his adoption papers, which of course documented his last name as Stipes. Blanche was returned her maiden name and full custody of Jack in the divorce, and no one considered the legal name for Jack, so he was called Crane. So now at nearly 50, Jack had his name legally changed to Crane on July 31, 1951. Jack worked at the State School, never taking vacation or extra days off, driving in the worse weather, until he was overcome by emphysema, in 1972. He went on medical leave, and had enough vacation, sick, and days off to last for nearly a year. He was able to recover to enjoy a sedentary retirement. He died January 23, 1978 at the Mount Vernon State Hospital. He was returned to Slater, and buried in the family plot.
