Trapped in the cab of an overturned gasoline transport truck Luther Baker, 40 yeas old, 653 Manchester Avenue, this city, manager of the Glo-Gas Oil Company, was burned to death in a headon collision with another vehicle seven miles south of Kokomo on Federal Road 31 early Friday morning. The operator of the other truck, Kenneth Mans, 27, Scott, Mich., also died in the flames of the wreckage. Baker had left here late Thursday night for Indianapolis to bring back a load of gasoline for Glo-Gas Oil Company of this city. Authorities at Tipton reported the gasoline transport was traveling north on Road 31 about 6:30 a.m. and the truck and trailer, loaded with onions of the Produce Trucking Company of Kalamazoo, was en route south. Appraently the vehicles met headon on the straight section of the pavement, and the gasoline spilled by the impact caused the fire and immediately engulfed the tangled vehicles. Officers were unable to approach the truck for a couple of hours after the accident because of the intense heat, and th bodies were reported to have been badly burned. Identification of Baker's body was made by Tipton officers through contact with the company here. Baker's body was taken to the Young Funeral Home at Tipton and later transferred to the Hoover-Miner Funeral Home in Wabash. Due to the burning wreckage, police set up a five-mile detour around the scene of the accident. Mr. Baker was born Nov. 8, 1909 in Wabash County the son of Andrew and Vinnie (Strickler) Baker. His marriage to Ruth Adams, Peru, occurred at New Castle, Aug. 8, 1933. Survivors include the widow, two children, Judy Kay and Susan, at home; the father, living at 913 Michigan Street, and a number of sisters and brothers.
