Luther Stumbaugh died very suddently at 6:15 Saturday evening, at his home, 796 Seventh avenue, after an illness of only a few minutes. Congestion of the lungs was the cause of death. Mr. Stumbaugh was in his usual health Satuday and went with his wife to a tea party at Mrs. Julia A. Deeds' house, in honor of Rev. and Mrs. Brickenbach. While there he became troubled with shortness of breath, and went to Dr. MacQuigg's house, only a short distance. He was told to go home immediately and did so. His wife was sent for but before she arrived he was in terrible agony and struggling for life. Dr. Hofstetter was called, and the doctors with the aid of the family, did all in their power to save him, but he had passed beyond eartly aid, and in less than a half hour after being taken sick he died. The doctors said that death was caused by congestion of the lungs, but why it should have happened count not be stated. The sufferer had eaten no ice cream and drank no cold water. Deceased was born in Shippensburge, Penn., November 12th, 1838. He spent his boyhood days there, and was married November 12th, 1862, at Lancaster, Penn., to Miss Mary L. Hubley. To the couple nine children were born, two of whom have preceded him to the grave. Those left are Mrs. Florence Evans of Clinton, and Milley, Mable, Laura, John Maude and Alma, all residing at home. All the family except Mrs. Evans were present to bid the loving father and husband a sad farewell. Mrs. Evans arrived at the house just after her father died. A sister of the deceased resides at Shippensburgh, Pa., and has been telegraphed for, and is expected to be here for the funeral. Mr. Stumbaugh, although not a member of any church, was an active worker in Presbyterian circles, and was one of the members of the board of trustees. When he moved to Lyons with his family in 1863 he at once commenced at his trade, stone work and plastering. He made scores of friends here by his kind and generous deeds and pleasant ways. The funeral services will be held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the family residence. Rev. Dr. Kaye will officiate and will be assisted by Rev. Bickenbach. Interment in Oaklawn cemetery.
