Pearce Bowlus, prominent Mt. Airy attorney, newspaper editor, community and business leader, died Tuesday at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was 73. Born in Middletown, Frederick County, Mr. Bowlus had lived in Mt. Airy since 1929 when he was named editor of the Community Reporter, a weekly newspaper owned by his brother-in-law, George C. Rhoderick. He resigned that position in 1957, but continued to write articles for the paper about Mt. Airy history until his death. In 1939 Mr. Bowlus was admitted to the Maryland Bar Association and practiced law in Mt. Airy until illness and recent major surgery forced him into semiretirement. During his more than 40 years as an attorney, Mr. Bowlus held a number of appointed positions in local government and in the legal community. He was counsel to the Mt. Airy Town Council for 25 years and served as counsel to the Carroll County Board of Education for 15 years. During the 1950s, Bowlus served several terms as president of the Carroll County Bar Association and was a former president of the Mt. Airy Chamber of Commerce. He also was a former magistrate. In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson awarded Mr. Bowlus a presidential citation in recognition of his service as Government Appeal Agent for the Carroll County Draft Board, a post he held for 20 years. Charles 0. Fisher Sr., president of the Maryland Bar Association and Mt. Airy town attorney, had known Mr. Bowlus for 35 years. "He was a man of great integrity, gentleness and ^fierce Independence. He was a small-town practitioner. It was the kind of practice he loved and he always concentrated on the community," Mr. Fisher said. A member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy for 50 years, Mr. Bowlus served as chairman of the church's official board and taught men's "Sunday school classes. He was widely read in Biblical history and had traveled to the Holy Land. He also was something of a local historian. In a recent Carroll County Times interview, he recalled when Mt. Airy was a bustling railroad and marketing center during the 1920s and 30s, when "you could get any commodity, any service you wanted" downtown. And when Saturday night band concerts were so crowded "you just couldn't move along the streets." Mt. Airy Mayor Lewis C. Dixon said he and Mr. Bowlus had had their disagreements over the years, but described him as "a very strong individual." "If he had a position on something, he knew where he stood, but you could always discuss things with him. He was very dedicated to the community. We are saddened by his passing," Mr. Dixon said. Mr. Bowlus, who lived on North Main Street, was the son of the late Maurice A. and Mary A. Young Bowlus. He is survived by wife Helen E.; son James P. of Bowie; daughter Helen B. Martin of Baltimore; sister Mrs. George C. Rhoderick of Middletown; and four grandchildren. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Burrier Funeral Home in Winfield. His pastor, the Rev. John E. Ewald, will officiate with assistance from the Rev. James H. Talley and the Rev. Wallace A. Lusk, pastor of Mt. Airy Full Gospel Church. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Mt. Airy. The family will receive friends, at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 pin.
