Dr. Robert Brumblay, Mrs. Lydia Cushman Brumblay, died at her home at Chicago Saturday. She would have been 86 next August. For a number of years she lived with her son in Spokane and during that time formed an extended circle of acquaintances. She was also well known in Walla Walla, where she lived with her son during most of the five years of his pastorate of Pioneer Methodist Episcopal church. Mrs. Brumblay was a daughter of Indiana and during her life was esteemed as a woman of education and culture. At the outbreak of the Civil War she completed her course in Union college, Merom, Ind. For a time she taught modern languages in Shortridge High School, Indianapolis. July 14, 1871, she was married to Captain George Riley Brumblay, a prominent lawyer, Captain Brumblay had commanded company K Ninth Indiana Cavalry, from the beginning of the Civil War and was brevetted major for gallant conduct. Later Captain Brumbray held public office and for several years was chief of the legal division of the United States pension bureau of Washington, D. C. He died in 1911. Mrs. Brumbray was a lineal descendant of Robert Cushman of the Plymouth colony. It was Cushman who commissioned the Mayflower. His wife and infant son were passengers on the Mayflower, while he followed them to America a few months later. Cushman preached the first Thanksgiving sermon in the new world. During her residence in Chicago she was named one of the famous Committee of One Hundred, including prominent men and women selected by Mayor Carter Harrison to investigate vice conditions. During her stay here, Mrs. Brumblay was active in the W. C. T. U. She was a member of Frances Willard union and held various offices in the county and eastern Washington organization. She was a teacher in the Bible school of St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal church, of which she was a member. Mrs. Brumblay is survived by two other sons, J. C. Brumblay, Winnemucca, Nev., and Thomas C. Brumblay, Harrisburg, Ill. Mrs. Brumblay is also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
