Mrs. Lydia Varner 1927 Bridgewater Bulletin New Germany, November 5- There passed away at an early hour this morning at her home here, one of the oldest residents of the place in the person of Lydia, widow of Elias Varner, at the age of eighty-three years. Deceased was the daughter of the late Henry and Mrs. Feindel, New Germany, the former being brother to George Feindel, the first white child born in this place. In her immediate family, she is survived by brothers, Hezekiah, United States; and William and Obediah Feindel of New Germany; and by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Lohnes, Worcester. There are left also sons-Uriah, Dorchester, Massachusetts; Charles, Kenneth, Henry, Obediah, and Joshua, New Germany; and two daughters, Mrs. John Stuart, Milton, Massachusetts and Mrs. Alvin Gates, Stanbourne. Her husband died in 1894 and as a widow, with nine children, she had given a life of service to the family, the community, and the public at large. For many years she conducted a boarding house, open at all hours to accomdate all who came. No one was ever turned away on account of not possessing the price necessary to pay for a meal or a night's lodging. She was ever active in the affairs of the Anglican Church and in everything that pertained to the welfare of the community. Obituary 1927 Progress Enterprise The funeral of the late Mrs. Elias Varner (Lydia Drucilla) took place from her late residence on Wednesday afternoon. The services at home and church were conducted by Canon Harris of Mahone. The attendance at the funeral was large, bespeaking the high esteem in which the deceased was held by all who knew her. Favourite hymns ,"Jesus, Lover of My Soul," "Nearer, My God, to Thee," "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," " and "Peace, Perfect Peace" were sung. Canon Haris' fine address was taken from the text Isaiah 46:4. "Even down to old age will He be with thee." He touched on the early history of the old historic church "St. John's in the Wilderness" and the part the deceased had taken in the life of the church. She had the honour of being the first to be received by God into this church by baptism on November 14, 1844, by Rev. James Cochrane, first rector of the parish and was always a most dedicated church member. She was tenderly conveyed to her last resting place by her sons, Henry, Charles, Kenneth, and Uriah, who acted as pall bearers. The floral offerings were numerous and very beautiful. Some showing their sympathy were Frank and Emily Dennis, brother, Hezekiah and sister, Elizabeth; son,Uriah; daughter, Millie; wreath from all the children; D.C. Thompson and fmaily; Adeline and Spurgeon; Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Freeman; Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Feindel and family; Lydia and Amiel; Cassie and family; Mrs. Ivan Grant and Freelove; and Mrs. John Stuart.
