Jean Barnard Henrichs was born to Merton and Floy Cellman Barnard on April 2, 1923 in Clarke County, Iowa. She was the second of five children. She attended rural schools in Clarke County and received her high school diploma from the New Virginia Consolidated Schools. She graduated from Osceola Junior College and later from Drake University in 1969. On July 4, 1948, Jean was married to Ivan Henrichs in Osceola, Iowa. They were the parents of three children, Martha Jane, Barry, and Mark. Jean lived within a few miles of her birthplace her entire life. She was a teacher for over 25 years, primarily teaching Kindergarten at the New Virginia center of the Interstate 35 Schools. In her retirement, Jean enjoyed quilting and visiting with her friends at the New Virginia Hen House. She was a faithful correspondent, writing to her sister and other relatives. Family was very important to her and she was very proud of her children, daughter-in-law, Lori, and grandsons, Kurt and Lance. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan, in 2001 and her brother, Frank Barnard, in 2012.
