Also for the many beautiful floral offerings. D. M. Smith, R. E. Hockersmith, J. D. Hockersmith, W. H. Hill R. E. Hockersmith, of Manhattan, J. D. Hockersmith, of Osage City, and W. H. Hill, of Kansas City, were here Tuesday in attendance at the funeral of their mother, Mrs. Lydia Smith. The Reveille-New Era (Hill City) Thursday, March 30, 1916 (edited for spelling) Obituary --- Lydia Hill-Smith Lydia Malin, was born April 10th, 1847, in Henry county, Ky., and died March 19, 1916, at 11:45 o'clock, a. m., at her home in Hill City, Kansas. She was married to James Hockersmith, November 1865, at Franklington, Ky. to which union two sons were born --- R. E. and John D. James Hockersmith, her husband died on July 27, 1874 and was buried at Franklington, Ky. United in wedlock with Wm. R. Hill, March 12, 1879, at Franklington, Ky. Her husband, Wm. R. Hill, died at East Lynn, Mo., Feb. 21, 1905 and was buried in Hill City cemetery. Deceased was married to D. M. Smith, on May 10, 1908, who survives his wife. The writer made his home with the deceased in 1884, when her husband was the owner and publisher of the Hill City Reveille, and on which paper we worked at that time. "Mother" Hill as we liked to call her at that time, was indeed a person of fine characteristics and had a kindly interest in all whom she came in contact with. Her sacrifices for the welfare of others were many, but she seem to feel better when she was doing the most to help others. We never have had the acquaintances of a more lovable character, and up to the time of her death we never heard an ill word spoken of the deceased. In her death the community sustains a great loss. Her husband, Wm. R. Hill, who preceded her in death, was the founder of Hill City, which bears his name. We, with a host of friends extend sympathy to the bereaved husband and relatives. Hill City Republican, Thursday, March 30, 1916 Lydia Malin was born in Franklin, Kentucky April 10th, 1847. Died in Hill City, Kansas Sunday March 19th, 1916. Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church on Tuesday, March 21, by Rev. E. L. Wright. Interment was made in the Hill City cemetery. At the age of thirteen years she was converted and became a member of the Baptist church to which she remained a faithful member to her death. She was united in marriage to James H. Hockersmith in November 1865. To this union were born two sons, Edward R. of Manhattan, Kansas, and John D. of Osage City, Kansas. Mr. Hockersmith died July 27, 1874. On March 12, 1879 she was united in marriage to W. R. Hill, founder of Hill City. They came to Graham county March 28, 1879 with the pioneers of this locality. To this union a daughter, Hannah Berda was born Jan. 8, 1880. She died May 10, 1885. Mr. Hill died at East Lynn, Mo., where he went for treatment on Febr. 21, 1905. On May 10, 1908 she and D. M. Smith, one of our respected old soldier citizens, were united in marriage. About six years ago the deceased suffered a stroke of paralysis. Several light attacks followed. A few days before her death she was stricken and became unconscious and so remained until death relieved her. Coming to Hill City with its earliest settlement she assisted in the organization of the Baptist church and was a charter member thereof. The ladies of the Eastern Star of which she was a loyal member, attended the funeral and assisted in the services. During the funeral hour all business houses were closed and draped in mourning in honor of her great services to the community. The deceased leaves to mourn her death her husband, D. M. Smith, two sons, E. R. and J. D. Hockersmith and a step son, W. H. Hill of Kansas City, Mo., all of whom were present at the funeral, and a host of friends who deeply sympathize with them in their great loss.
