Hill was born in Fountain county, near Covington, Ind., on June 23, 1849, and died at East Lynne, Mo., on Tuesday morning, Feb. 21, 1905, aged 55 years and 8 months. Arriving at the age of one year, Mr. Hill's parents moved to Illinois and settled on a farm in Champagne county, which is now the city of Ogden. Here Mr. Hill grew to manhood, and at the age of 22 was united in marriage to Miss Maggie J. Jones. To this union W. H. Hill was born Dec. 7, 1872. Two years later, Mr. W. R. Hill with his wife and son moved to Hutchinson, this state, where he and others interested themselves in the laying out of the town site of that city. At the same time Mr. Hill was also interested in the laying out of several additions to the city of Wichita, which are now right in the heart of that city. W. H. Hill first landed where Hill City now stands on Sept. 6, 1876. On his first trip here he met James Henry, a cattleman. Two days later (Sept. 8) he visited Collins' ranch, five miles north, and on the evening of the same day stopped with O. G. Nevins on Bow creek. Mr. Hill returned to Topeka via Ellis immediately, got together a number of people having in view the locations of a city where Hill City now stands, and on the 26th day of December of the same year 13 wagons pulled out of Topeka westward bound. On the 13th of January, 1877, the company found themselves one mile east of Stockton in one of the worst blizzards this region has ever experienced. Here most of the company decided to go no further west, but Mr. Hill and John Stanley and family continued on their journey and landed where Hill City stands on Feb. 1, 1877. Frequent trips were made east by Mr. Hill, and the next bunch of settlers he brought was from Kentucky, 308 railroad tickets being necessary to get them to Ellis, from whence they came overland, settling in the east part of the county and established the town of Nicodemus. In the fall of 1878 Mr. Hill went to Georgetown, Ky., and brought out a settlement of white people, among them W. J. Crawford and family, Crawford's addition to Hill City being named after that gentleman. In the spring of 1879 Mr. Hill went to Henry county, Ky., and on March 12 of the same year was united in marriage to Mrs. Lydia Hockersmith, and returning to Hill City, arrived here March 28, 1879. To this union was born on January 8, 1880, Hannah B. Hill, the first child born in this city, who died May 8, 1886. From 1886 Mr. Hill's efforts in the up building of Hill City were untiring when, in 1896, he went to Colorado and engaged in mining until two years ago, when his health failed him. He at once placed himself under treatment of several eminent Denver physicians, but receiving no relief, he returned to Hill City. Here he underwent treatment at the hands of our doctors, after which he went to Excelsior Springs, Mo., to try the curative properties of the waters there, and per request of friends. Mr. Hill placed himself under the care of Dr. J. W. Farrow of East Lynne, Mo., who gave him much relief. Returning to Hill City, Mr. Hill spent last summer here. Being in life a man of much push and energy, he made several trips over the county, thereby over exerting himself, and on January 18, last, he returned to East Lynne, where he remained but 10 days. Upon taking his departure from there for Kansas City, he informed Dr. Farrow and several friends that he had not felt better in 10 years. While in Kansas City and during the late cold spell, Mr. Hill contracted la grippe. He at once returned to East Lynne where, upon his condition being noticed by Dr. Farrow, that gentleman immediately telegraphed Mrs. Hill to come at one, where she arrived on Friday, Feb. 17, last. The following Sunday Mrs. Hill wired her son, Mr. W. H. Hill, to come at once, as his father was seriously ill and sinking very fast, and he left that afternoon via Wa-Keeney, arriving at East Lynne, Mo., on Monday, Feb. 20, at 1 p. m. Repairing to the bedside of his father, that gentleman immediately recognized his son and called him by name, and at 2:50 o'clock the following morning (Tuesday, Feb. 21, 1905,) he passed away. The body was immediately prepared for burial and shipped to this city, arriving here on Wednesday night, Feb. 22. Thursday. Feb. 23, at 2 o'clock p. m., the funeral services were held at the Baptist church in this city, conducted by the Rev. D. F. Heitmeyer. Interment took place in the Hill City cemetery. Mr. Hill leaves a wife, three sons, three brothers and three sisters, besides numerous friends, to mourn his loss. Mr. W. R. Hill in life was a man of good moral character, was temperate in his habits and was not addicted to the use of vulgarity. He was a friend to all mankind and up to the time of his death was a member in good standing of the Baptist church in Hill City.
