Description	:	Lydia Gaasland, 84, Bismarck, died Dec. 12, 1999 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Brad Stoltenow officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Lydia was born Nov. 10, 1915 near Tappen, to Jacob and Eva (Dockter) Schumacher. She attended the School for the Deaf at Devils Lake. Lydia was born Nov. 10, 1915 near Tappen, to Jacob and Eva (Dockter) Schumacher. She attended the School for the Deaf at Devils Lake. On Oct. 14, 1939, Lydia and Arne Richard Gaasland were united in marriage at the home of her parents in Streeter. They established their home in Marion, where they farmed until 1950, when they moved to a farm south of Tappen. Then in 1965, they moved to Bismarck, which remained their home until their deaths. A hard-working person, Lydia was employed at a number of Bismarck locations. Her first job was at Deluxe Cleaners where she worked as an alterations lady. Following that, Lydia and her husband together performed janitorial and cleaning services for several local businesses until her skill as a seamstress led to a position at PRS Manufacturing. She worked as a seamstress and pattern designer, making tarps for the military and clothing for snowmobile enthusiasts. Her grandchildren cherish miniature snowmobile suits she made for them and their dolls according to the designs created for the commercial suits. Following the closure of PRS Manufacturing, Lydia worked for the A.W. Lucas Company in the popular restaurant in the basement of the department store. Lydia left A.W. Lucas and again joined her husband performing janitorial and cleaning services; this time for the Kirkwood Motor Inn until her retirement. Her willingness to work, her pride in her work, and the admiration and respect earned from fellow workers led to her recognition by the Quota Club as the Outstanding Deaf Woman in Bismarck-Mandan in 1978, an honor in which she took great pride. Skilled at crafts, Lydia particularly enjoyed quilting, crocheting and sewing. Each of her great-grandchildren is blessed to have their own special crib quilt featuring her originial designs. Her children and grandchildren cherish their own unique quilts and afghans, which she created, as well as many intricate laced doilies and tablecloths, which she crocheted. Lydia is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Joann, Mandan, Gary and Dorene, Bismarck; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Robert Robinson, Bismarck; six grandchildren and their spouses, Jay and Amy Robinson, Cindy and Tom Leingang, Kimberly and Tom Baillie, Stacy and Mark Magsam, Heather and Chris Hamar, and Jason Gaasland; four great-grandchildren, Samantha and Benjamin Leingang, Evan Baillie, and Zane Hamar; two brothers, Benjamin and Marvin; three sisters, Emma, Rose and Magdelena (Maggie); numerous nieces and nephews; and her friends at the Patterson Place, where she resided for the last 16 years of her life. Lydia was preceded in death by her husband, Arne, who died in September of 1989; four brothers, Jacob, Henry, Adam and Christ; and two sisters, Mary Schmidt and Leah Mertz.
