Lyle was born on the family farm near Waukee, August 10, 1930, to Anna Pauline (Young) and Carl Clark Smith. He had an ideal childhood, growing up with his four older siblings. He graduated from Waukee School and later in life received a BA Degree from Metropolitan University. Lyle served as Postmaster in Waukee, IA, for 29 years, retiring in 1987. On two occasions he was asked to move to the West Des Moines office. He went for a period of time, but always preferred to return to Waukee. As a young boy, Lyle had three goals. 1) To own a farm; 2) To be a Colonel in the military; and 3) To be a member of the Masonic Lodge. He achieved all three. He owned and operated Walnut Creek Farm. He was a shepherd of the soil, using many conservation practices. He won the Conservation, Pride of America Award and taught ridge-till farming on the contour at the National Ridge-till Convention. His farm was so meticulously maintained, friends called it "The Park". He served in the National Guard and Army Reserve for 39 years, retiring in 1990 with the rank of Colonel. He became a member of Delta Masonic Lodge #356 in Dallas Center, serving as Master on two different occasions. He joined the Des Moines Consistory and served as Master of Kadosh in 1975. He had been a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine since 1961. He was invited and joined the Royal Order of Jesters., Court #46. In 1987 he was given the honorary 33rd Degree of Masonry. His interests were not limited to those three. He built the home in which they lived for 46 years. He learned to fly and built a runway on the farm. He also built a swimming pool using the panels from a Harvest-store silo. He loved to golf, summers in Iowa and winters in AZ. One of the highlights of golfing was being asked to be the chairman of the Security Committee for the 1999 U.S. Senior Golf Tournament held at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club. He joined the Waukee Disciples of Christ Church when he was ten years old and served the church in many capacities, Deacon, Elder, Chairman of the Church Board and was on various committees. He was a member and past president of the West Des Moines Rotary Club. He was one of the founders of the Waukee Educational Foundation, insisting a percentage of the funds be used for scholarships. He enjoyed problem solving and inventing things. Farming gave him many opportunities. Even while he was enduring treatments for cancer, he invented two devices he could use to make his care easier. Mayo Hospital employees called him "The Inventor". The day he checked out of the hospital, the last thing they said to him was, "Keep Inventing". His family and friends remember him as a generous, loving person with a ready smile. He was devoted to his wife, Marilyn, for all of their 56 years of marriage. Their home was always a gathering place for family and friends. His nieces and nephews loved him for his strength, both physically and mentally. He always had time for them and made them feel special. They remember airplane rides, swimming in the pool, eating freshly picked sweet corn, making home-made ice cream, and rides on the four-wheeler. They knew they could trust him and will always admire him for his integrity, loyalty and love. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Ronald and Verle. Lyle is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn; sisters, June (Verle) Blake of Dallas Center and Catherine Barker of Middleton, WI; sisters-in-law, Florence Smith of Marshall, MN, Vivian Smith of Clive, and Pat Frazier of Harlan, IA, and seventeen nieces and nephews.
