Lyle Buchanan was born March 30, 1916, in Burr, Nebraska to William and Mabel (DeFreece) Buchanan. Lyle grew up on the family farm and attended country school through the 8th grade, some of those years being taught by his aunt Katheren. Lyle Buchanan was born March 30, 1916, in Burr, Nebraska to William and Mabel (DeFreece) Buchanan. Lyle grew up on the family farm and attended country school through the 8th grade, some of those years being taught by his aunt Katheren. He attended Tecumseh High School in Tecumseh, Nebraska and joined the United States Army in 1942. Lyle fought during World War II, including battles in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe, until he was honorably discharged in 1945. After the war, Lyle moved to South Dakota and started a roller skating rink in Tyndall, South Dakota. He later drove the Hamms beer truck for a few years until he began farming, first in the Mission Hill area and then buying the family farm in rural Irene in 1961. He married Dureen Huber on November 9, 1947 in Yankton, South Dakota and together had two boys: Randall in 1956 and Russell in 1965. Lyle and Dureen moved to Yankton in 1992 and lived there until 2008 when they moved back to the farm to live with their son Russell. Lyle spent the last three month of his life at the Wakonda Heritage Manor. Lyle was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. He was involved in pork producers and was a 4-H leader and Luther League leader. He also served on the election board and the Jamesville Township board. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool, woodworking, and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Survivors include his wife, Dureen of Wakonda; son, Russell (Susan) Buchanan of Irene; three grandchildren: Dillon, Tessa, and William; sister, Norma Eilers of Sterling, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randall Buchanan; two sisters: Irma and Leala; and brother-in-law, Alfred Eilers.
