Description	:	Our first home was a good log house of two rooms below and an "up stairs",where the children mostly slept. There were usually three or four good warm beds in this "upper room" and the partitions were calico curtains. There was a good creek, running through a corner of the farm and there was a good grove that always supplied an abundance of fire wood, posts and rails for fences. I recall mothers telling how dismal the nights sometimes were, when father had to be away for three nights on his trips to market, and about how the wolves would often howl around the house. I have often heard them at a distance myself. The great prairie fires were a striking feature of the early years for the great prairies were covered with rank grass and I fancy that a prairie fire before a brisk gale is about as awe inspiring as the recent eruption of Mt.
