Darlene Jacobson Burke, 88, of Mapleton died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton. Services were 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with Pastor Barb Joy officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Mapleton. M. Darlene Jacobson Burke was born Oct. 26, 1920, at Oto, Iowa, in Woodbury County, the daughter of Martin L. and Olive E. (Hale) Sawin. She was united in marriage to Donald Jacobson on Jan. 20, 1941, in Sioux City. While Donald was serving in World War II, Darlene lived at the Colonial Apartments in Mapleton and later moved to the Home Apartment, also in Mapleton. In 1956, the family moved to their new home in Mapleton, built by Donald and Darlene. Donald died July 5, 1976. Darlene continued to live in the family home until June 2, 2004, when she moved to Maple Heights Nursing Home. Darlene was a homemaker and worked as a bookkeeper at the family business, Jacobson Brothers Lumber and Hardware in Mapleton. Following Donald's death, she worked as a clerk at Kraft Clothing in Mapleton for years. She married Bill Burke on Sept. 24, 1977. He died Oct. 23, 1986. On Jan. 12, 1994, she married Lyle M. Culler, who died Aug. 23, 2003. Darlene was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, as well as the Night Circle and the Church Choir. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens, enjoying their dinners and dances. She also was an active member of the Mapleton Rotary, Mapleton Community Club, the Mapleton Camping Club, the Rebecca's, the Neighborhood Coffee Club and the last surviving member of the Mapleton Civic Club. She truly enjoyed her family, crocheting afghans for family friends, and the missions, reading, and knitting. Music was always a part of her life, a passion she passed onto her children. She especially enjoyed singing, dancing and playing the piano and viola. She loved her flowers and house plants and found pleasure in traveling and camping in her camper. Those survivors left to cherish their memories of Darlene include her children, Donna (John) Mininger of Las Vegas, Nev., Duane (Carol) Jacobson, also of Las Vegas, Dee Ann (Ted) Paulsrud of Danbury, Iowa, and Debra (Randy) Ernst of Mapleton; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren; a sister, Dorothy (Kenneth) Slentz of Winnipeg, Canada; two brothers, Martin Sawin of Smartville, Calif., and Oren Sawin of Climbing Hill, Iowa; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald D. Jacobson; a grandson, Jeremy Ernst; her parents, Martin L. and Olive E. "Ollie" Sawin; a sister, Bonnie L. Baker Miller; her second husband, William "Bill" Burke; her third husband, Lyle M. "Maurice" Culler; and two nephews, Joseph Sawin and Kenneth Slentz.
