Marie Claussen was born in Chadron on March 24, 1920 A member of the Deadhorse community near Chadron she was the second child of Herman and Hazel(Grantham)Claussen and grew up in the Chadron area. She was a member of a close-knit family of pioneer immigrants and never lost her dedication to them. Marie was educated in a rural school in Dawes County and graduated from Chadron High School in 1938. For several years, she worked for the First National Bank in Chadron. During World War II she met Orland Roscoe Vance of Lewellen when he was stationed at Fort Robinson. They were married on April 14, 1946. Orland's job with the Chicago and Northwestern Railway brought them to Valentine in 1946. where Marie would remain for over 65 years. To this union was born a daughter, Cay. Orland and Marie also always had a special dog in their lives, with the first being Tuffy. In 1949, Marie began working for the Valentine Production Credit Association and was employed there for 35 1/2 years. She enjoyed working with numbers and once said that " nothing was more fun than balancing a checkbook." For many years Marie was a devoted member of the Church of the Nazarene, where she served as treasurer. She loved a clean house and liked nothing more than to wash windows, dust, and have sparkling floors. She often helped the elderly in her community. She is survived by: her daughter. Cay; three granddaughters; two great-granddaughters: sister: Catherine; brothers: Hollis, Harry, Jim, Dale and John; sister-in-law Jess; and of course, her beloved dachshund, Max. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Orland, her parents; sisters Helen and Ramona; and brothers: Charles and Claywell. The Chadron Record Oct. 11, 2011
