On 23 June 1940 Mabel Ezinga married at the age of 21 years the one year younger Albert Elgersma, in Neerlandia, Alberta, Canada. The agrarian hamlet Neerlandia is located in central Alberta, Canada within the County of Barrhead, between Mellowdale and Vega, approximately 20 kilometers north of Barrhead and northwest of Westlock. Neerlandia was founded by Dutch immigrants beginning in 1911. The name "Neerlandia" refers to the first settlers' country of origin, the Netherlands. The surrounding area is largely agricultural based with many people in the out-lying area also being involved in construction and other trades as well. In October 1971 Mabel and Albert moved from their farm to the hamlet of Neerlandia. Her husband Albert Elgersma died in April 2008 at the age of 88 years from pneumonia in Barrhead, Alberta, Canada, and was buried in the Neerlandia Cemetery, Alberta, Canada. Widow Mabel Elgersma died in November 2016 at the age of 98 years and was buried in the same cemetery. OBITUARY, published in The Edmonton Journal on Nov. 17, 2016 Mrs. Mabel Elgersma, nee Elzinga, left her earthly home and entered into her heavenly home on November 13, 2016 at the age of 98 years. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 1 p.m. from the Neerlandia Christian Reformed Church. Donations are gratefully accepted to the Gideons.
