Elgersma and his first wife Antje Reinsma, who died in June 1923 in Wons, when Albert was three years old. He was named after his maternal grandfather, Albert Reinsma. Rijndam in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, together with his father Anne Elgersma, his stepmother Haitina and his brother Sybren Elgersma, who died on 28 April 1940 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada at the age of 21 years. On 23 June 1940 Albert Elgersma married in the Christian Reformed Church at Neerlandia, Alberta, Canada at the age of 20 years the one year older Maaike (Mabel) Elzinga, born on 13 August 1918 in Hallum, Friesland, Netherlands, daughter of Wynsen Elzinga en Saakje Hania. The agrarian hamlet Neerlandia is located in central Alberta, Canada within the County of Barrhead, between Mellowdale and Vega, approximately 20 kilometers north of Barrhead and northwest of Westlock. Neerlandia was founded by Dutch immigrants beginning in 1911. The name "Neerlandia" refers to the first settlers' country of origin, the Netherlands. The surrounding area is largely agricultural based with many people in the out-lying area also being involved in construction and other trades as well. They had the following children Elgersma: 1. Albert Elgersma died in April 2008 at the age of 88 years from pneumonia in Barrhead, Alberta, Canada, and was buried in the Neerlandia Cemetery, Alberta, Canada.
