She married Lee Otis Stodgell on 27 Oct 1923. ________________________________________ Mrs. Lee Stodgell is Killed on R.R. Crossing Was Prominent in Community Life Many Years. One of the saddest tragedies that has happened in this community for a long time occurred Saturday morning last, when Mrs. Lee Stodgell, 41, a prominent farm woman living south of town, met instant death when her car was struck by the northbound Rock Island passenger train at the crossing near the Stodgell home shortly before seven o'clock. Mr. Stodgell had crossed the track driving a light truck on his way west to a bean field nearby. Mrs. Stodgell was following in the family car, and evidently she had forgotten about the train and did not hear nor see the train as it rounded the curve from the south. Mrs. Stodgell was thrown several feet north and away from the car with was badly demolished. The community was greatly saddened by her untimely death and the funeral services held at the Reformed Presbyterian church on Tuesday afternoon were largely attended, many not getting into the church. Reverend H. G. Patterson conducted the last rites, assisted by Reverend M. W. Dougherty of the Sharon church. The burial was at Elmwood cemetery, with L. M. Edgar, George Butler, Maurice Hutcheson, Ralph Yohe, F. B. Scales, Ralph Wilson E. H. Hensleigh, and Don Granner as pallbearers. Many from other parts of the country were present, as Mr. Stodgell had been prominent in the women's work of the Farm Bureau for the past several years. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family. Relatives called here for the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hetherington and son, Ralph, and John Hetherington; Mrs. Eva Murphy and Mrs. Opal Smith and son Cloy of St. Louis; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lind of Burlington; Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Stodgell, Donna, Joan and Maxine of West Burlington; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ransford of Palmyra, Nebraska; Ralph Ransford of Eagle, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. harrison Scattergood and Mr. and Mrs. Julius Morrison and Larry of Osceola; Mrs. Emery Pittard of Keokuk; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Driffle, Mrs. Frank Hawkins and son Ralph and Yuanita Gibb of Alexis, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Honse, Adrea and Benny of Mt. Union; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Blakely of Fairfield; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hingst and Betty, James Stodgell and Ed Stodgell of Yarmouth. Mabel Ellen Hetherington was born at Huston, Illinois, June 2, 1900, the daugther of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Hetherington. She came with her family to Iowa in 1910 [possibly it says 1916]. She graduated from the Morning Sun high school in 1920 and taught school at Cairo two years and at Columbus Junction one year. On October 27, 1924, she was united in marriage with Mr. Lee Stodgell of this community. To this union was born six daugthers, Mary Jane, Elizabeth, Leota, Helen, Mildred, and Martha, all of whom with their father survive. Besides these she is survived by her father and mother. Mr. and Mrs. Hetherington, and five brothers and two sisters: Mrs. Florence Sweet, of Los Angeles, California; Roy, Ralph, and John of St. Louis; Vernon and Raymond of Morning Sun, and Mrs. Mary Lind of Burlington. She made a profession of her faith in Christ and united with the Old Bethel congregation of the Reformed Presbyterian church in Illinois in her early years and transferred her membership to the Morning Sun congregation when she came to Iowa, of which congregation she remained till her death. She was a beloved daugther, a faithful wife and a kind mother. Mrs. Stodgell was a talented woman, active in the work of the church and the community. She taught for a time in the children's division of the Sabbath school and served on the social and program committees of the Women's Missionary Society and on the program committee of the Inter-Church Association.
