Born October 24, 1896, near Alexis, Illinois, he was the son of John Wesley and Melissa Jane Ransford Stodgell. He married M. Ellen Hetherington October 27, 1923. She died December 6, 1941. He married Flora Roush Hildebrand November 1, 1945. She died June 17, 1973. He was a farmer in the Morning Sun area. He attended the Morning Sun school. He was a Presbyterian. Born October 24, 1896, near Alexis, Illinois, he was the son of John Wesley and Melissa Jane Ransford Stodgell. He married M. Ellen Hetherington October 27, 1923. She died December 6, 1941. He married Flora Roush Hildebrand November 1, 1945. She died June 17, 1973. He was a farmer in the Morning Sun area. He attended the Morning Sun school. He was a Presbyterian. He was state corn-husking champion in 1934 and 1937. He was a charter board member of the Rural Electric Cooperative. He was a former member of the Louisa County Farm Bureau. Survivors include six daughters Mrs. Mary Jane (Melvin) Brown of Morning Sun, Elizabeth (Keith) Renner of Danville, Leota (Gene) Pilling of Mediapolis, Helen Baum of Dillsboro, North Carolina, Millie (Dan) Bied of West Burlington and Martha Irish of South Elgin, Illinois; a step-nephew, Rex Roush of Claremore, Oklahoma; three sisters, May Hoke, Evalyn Stodgell and Daisy Hanson, all of Morning Sun; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren. Along with his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by five brothers. There will be no visitation. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Presbyterian Church, Morning Sun, with the Reverend Jack Edmisson officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun. Memorials have been established for the First United Presbyterian Church and the Mellinger Memorial Library, Morning Sun.
