Description	:	Mabel Emily Amick Metzger was the daughter of James Hazel Amick and Ella C Hitchcock Amick they married April 30, 1874 Shellrock, Butler, Iowa She was the only child that lived of this union. Her mother Ella, while pregnant with her second child, went and nursed some neighbors who had a bad fever,back to good health again. Ella then caught the fever and died. Her mother Ella, while pregnant with her second child, went and nursed some neighbors who had a bad fever,back to good health again. Ella then caught the fever and died. Amick was so hurt over her loss, that he did not marry again for several years and went out to California for a while and stayed with his brother William Amick. He came back home and became a farmer and married again to Adie Bowen. He owned an opera house and a restaurant in Shellrock. He and his second wife had several children. There are two huge Amick markers showing the graves of his family, which is across the Riverside Cememtery road which devids some of the markers, it's about 50 ft from Ella Mae Hitchcocks Amicks grave. Mabel was raised by her maternal grandparents Charles and Laura Eastmen Hitchcock. They are buried in the same row as Ella Hitchcock Amick. She was their second and only living daughter. They had suffered the loss of their first daughter Emma to a gunshot wound of a tragic accident by a neighbors child. Emma was only 10 yrs old. While playing over at the Hitchcocks family farm a neighbors son picked up a shot gun and killed her as reported in the local news paper. Mabel is listed on the 1880 census as their granddaughter while she lived with the Hitckcock's. They had a summer home which they retired to in Clear Lake, Iowa. There she meet and was friends with, Lou and Jean Henry. Lou Henry became the wife of the President of the United States Herbert Hoover. My grandmother Adeline Lu-Lu Metzger was named after Lou Henry Hoover. Mabel married Harvey Ressler Metzger August 21, 1895, Butler County, Iowa. They had five children: - Oliver Charles Metzger born 1897 died WWI in France - Adeline Lu-Lu Metzger born February 28, 1900 - Paul James Metzger born 1903 - Carl Taft Metzger born 1909 - Darrell born April 26, 1912 died 6 yrs old May 27, 1918 Darrell died from measles and starvation. Harvey Metzger was rarely home and had several jobs that never lasted long, he was a druggiest, monuments maker, sales man, farmer, cook, which are mentioned in the newspaper account. Mabel divorced him on grounds of desertion in 1919. She then moved around living here and there with family and friends. She died at her daughters house in Minnesota in 1957. Where ever Mabel lived, she was active in ladies and church groups. She was an artist and painted, her favorite flower was the Honeysuckle. She loved small dogs and never remarried. The family stories are those of her great grandchildren. grandchildren.
