Salyers, 88 years of age, of Grand Island, Nebraska (formerly of Oxford) died Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the Golden Living Center – Grand Island Park Place in Grand Island. Mabel was born on June 29, 1923 on the family farm south of Atlanta in Harlan County, Nebraska to W.G. and Louisa (Codding) Ewers. Mabel received her education from Mascot High School, graduating with the class of 1940. On April 19, 1942 she was united in marriage to Merlin "Dean" Salyers at Mabel's parent's home in Harlan County. Dean and Mabel farmed for over 30 years in Harlan County. The couple were married for over 68 years at the time of Dean's passing on May 11, 2010. Mabel was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oxford. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Music was a very important part of her life. She was also employed at J.C. Penney's in Holdrege for many years. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, Thelma Ewers; son, Marion Salyers, daughter, Deanna Salyers; brother, Roy Ewers; and sisters: Edith Loar and Virginia Smith. Survivors are: son, Mike Salyers and his wife, Barb of Harvard, Nebraska; daughters: Susan Schiefelbein and her husband, Ed of Winfield, Missouri, Sally Vaughn of Hershey, Nebraska, and Beth Fisher of Hewitt, Texas; 11 grandchildren: Lisa Krieger, Wendy Pollard, Sarah Jones, Richard Schiefelbein, Deanna Hanlon, Annjie Schiefelbein, Dan Vaughn, Tim Vaughn, Staci Gilmore, Heidi Dossey, Brian Fisher; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters: Marilyn Meyer and her husband, Rollie of Davis, CA and Dorothy Thengvall and her husband, Phil of Wichita, KS; brother, Bruce Ewers of Oklahoma City, OK; two sisters-in-law: Della Davison of Prosser, Washington, Norma Larson and her husband, Orville of San Diego, California; and a host of relatives and friends. Burial was in the Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, NE.
