Mrs. Chaffee was born Nov. 18, 1876, in the old town of Milford to William Francis and Juliet O. Carlton. She taught for many years in rural schools near Spirit Lake and later in the city school. She was the Red Cross Home secretary in Spirit Lake from 1918 to 1924, and did secretarial work in the office of R. S. Carlton from 1925 to 1955. Mrs. Chaffee was married in Sept. 1902 to W. N. Chaffee in Spirit Lake. Mr. Chaffee died in 1938. The couple had no children. She was a member of the Methodist church, and served in the choir, Women's Foreign Missionary Society, Ladies' Aid, and was a Sunday School teacher. She is survived by a brother and a sister, R. S. Carlton of Spirit Lake, and Esther Carlton of Bartlesville, Okla. Her parents and a brother and a sister preceded her in death. Rev. C. B. Wittrock?, officiated the service and burial was in Lakeview Cemetery. Pallbearers were M. E. Carnahan, Howard Watts, Lee Smith, Paul Bramblett, C. F. Fleming and J. C. Lieb. Music was furnished by a quartette from the church. Harpole Funeral Home in Sprite Lake had charge of the arrangements. Obituary is published in The Spirit Lake Beacon, Oct. 18, 1956. -----------
