Read More	Considering her first name, Mabel, to be hideously old fashioned, she refused to answer to it and was known as June her whole life. June and her brother Ellsworth grew up in the tiny town of Almira, surrounded by farmland in a fairly remote part of Washington. Their father, George R. McDonald, owned Almira's only hotel and store so June grew up in comparative comfort - but freely admitted she dreamed from a young age of a more varied, urban social life. As work started nearby on the construction of the historic Grand Coulee Dam, the hotel where the family lived filled up with new guests instead of the customary visiting relatives and salesmen. They brought fresh tales of a different way of life, away from the farms (everything she yearned for) as well as providing the opportunity: on 13 Sep 1936 June McDonald married Jesse "Don" Donard Adams, a recently graduated young engineer working on the dam. Mr & Mrs Don and June Adams later moved to California where their three children grew up. The marriage ended in divorce, though in hindsight many years later June admitted they were not well matched and she was happier afterwards. June and Irma, the second Mrs Don Adams, both did their level best to maintain cordial relations and were often present together at family gatherings, particularly after the death of Don in 1986. June was a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother as summed up in her obituary in the Alameda Times-Star on 26 Feb 2004: JUNE ADAMS Passed away peacefully Sunday, February 22, 2004 in Oakland, CA. Born July 9, 1917 in Almira, WA to George and Evalyn McDonald. Survived by her children, Irene Bruinsma Adams, M.D. of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Monte and Sue Adams of Redding, CA and Sally Adams Bruno of Oakland, CA. Preceded in death by her grandson, Terry L. Bruno Jr. Survived by 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Retired from UC Berkeley. Graveside service to be held at Mountain View Cemetery, Thursday, February 26, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
