She died Tuesday, August 15, 1995 at the Colonial Manor in Groton. Mabel M. Smith was born August 24, 1898 to Frank and Eldora (Dickens) Smith on their homestead near Groton. She grew up there and attended country schools. She married Deno F. Erdmann on September 29, 1916, in James, S.D. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith in 1933. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Groton. She and her husband farmed on the Erdmann homestead. After he died in 1971, she moved into Groton. She grew beautiful flower gardens and furnished flowers for the alter at the church. She entered the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in 1993. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Doris) Duffy of Sioux Falls and Mrs. Verne (Beverly) McCullough of Groton; one daughter-in-law, Mildred Erdmann of Groton; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, two sons and three grandchildren. Casketbearers were Gregory McCullough, David McCullough, Gene McCullough, Gary Duffy, Jeffrey Boyte, and Richard Osborn. Organist was Alvera Neuman, and soloist was Tony Thoreson. Ushers were Gene Neuman and Robert Schuelke.
