Description	:	MOM, Mabel Mae Barlow Kluth. Mabel was born August 22, 1920 in Grandview, WA to Lester Ray Barlow, Sr. and Zillaph Mae Rogers Tinius. In 1934 the family moved to Arizona for her mother’s health, traveling in a homebuilt Jitney as the family described it. Mabel was born August 22, 1920 in Grandview, WA to Lester Ray Barlow, Sr. and Zillaph Mae Rogers Tinius. In 1934 the family moved to Arizona for her mother’s health, traveling in a homebuilt Jitney as the family described it. Mabel told many stories of living in the desert and walking a great distance in the heat to go to school. The luxuries of a school bus were not available at that time. In 1935 the family moved back to Washington after her mother died, settling in Mabton, where Mabel and Betty considered this to be the jumping off place of the earth. Mabel and Betty cried for days, preferring the big town of Grandview. However, this proved to be a lucky move for Mabel. Just across the street she met and married the boy next door, Walter "Wally" Kluth, Sr. As she described it, his method of flirting involved throwing snowballs at her. It worked. On August 23, 1938, she married the boy next door and shortly after they moved north of Sunnyside in 1939 and lived on the Rowe farm property where Wally was the foreman. The farm used German POW’s for farm labor. After the farm was sold in the early part of 1948, the Kluth Family bought a house at 811 Custer Avenue and moved in during a nasty cold spell that often grips the Yakima Valley. Mabel just recently moved out of that same house after raising her family and building many memories. After Wally’s heart attack in 1957, Mabel went to work for the Lower Valley Credit Bureau and continued there until 1965. When Wally bought the Townhouse Richfield, Mabel assumed the administrative duties for the family service station. When the station was sold in 1968 Wally began his own business, Walt’s Heating, she assumed those same duties. This also afforded her time to play with her granddaughters. Mike came back in 1970 to work in the family business. When Wally passed in 1974, Mabel decided to start her second career at Sunnyside Community Hospital. She loved working there seeing her friends and making new ones. Mabel worked there until 2004. She always said that her short work week provided her with time and money to do her grandma thing and visit her brother & sisters. Mabel and her sisters, Mollie & Betty, spent a lot of time together over the years and went to the Padres Spring training. The three of them loved to welcome in the New Year at Lawrence Welk's in Escondido. Mabel enjoyed going on trips and having fun with her sisters. The three of them were dubbed "The Golden Girls." While working at the Credit Bureau, she became a member of Credit Women’s Professionals, was also very active in bowling and cherished her church activities at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Sunnyside. Mabel was a very active member of the Red Hat Society, Nouvella and loved the color purple, and told others "is there any other color?" She also was active with the Sunnyside Community Concert and enjoyed her trips to the Capitol Theater. Wally and Mabel were founding members of Our Saviors Lutheran Church where she was very active until her health failed. Many will also remember Mabel as their Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. In May of 2014 Mabel moved to the Camas Prestige Care and Rehabilitation from the facility at Sunnyside to be closer to her children, Mike and Karen. She found new activities at Prestige and became a bingo addict and learned to bead. Mabel loved the outings that the facility provided and enjoyed herself until the end, especially Starbucks Sunday. Mabel Barlow Kluth was preceded in death by her husband, Wally, her parents Lester and Mae Barlow; two brothers, Lester Jr. “Sonny” and William “Bill”; two sisters, Betty Winn and Mollie Fairbanks, daughter in law Virginia “Gini” Kluth and grandson Russell “Rusty” Kluth. Mabel is survived by her Children: Walter Jr. “Pete” Kluth of Sunnyside, Michael Kluth and wife Jackie of Washougal, WA; Karen Kluth Anderson and husband Bill of Camas, WA, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside. A celebration of Mabel's life will continue at Our Saviour's Lutheran church to reminisce with wonderful stories about her. Please honor Mabel by wearing the color purple and a red hat.
